I know multiple references in a text can be made to a single footnote. I'm trying to figure it out or write it down, respectively.[1]
Okay. Now I know moving the <references /> tag will reset the numbering. The tag has to be there to convert the <ref> tag into actual references and must come after them at some point. If there are multiple <references /> tags, the numbering resets after each instance.
For testing purposes, I'll add another reference.[2]. This one I slightly changed to <ref name="Daddy">. If I refer to it a second time[2], the first entry to the reference, i.e. enclosed by the opening and closing tags, supersedes what following references with the same name may contain. Furthermore, <ref name="Daddy"/>[2] makes the whole affair a self-closing tag.
