Ryouko's grandmother is the mother of Kuroi Nana and Nakase, the latter being Ryouko's mother.

Not much is known about her, except that she had a major falling-out with both her husband and her daughters when Ryouko was about three years old. This was in large part due to her husband and daughters' necessity to conceal and not talk about Nana's Magical Girl status. Unusually, the medical branch of the MSY, the MHD, decided against granting Ryouko's grandmother trusted NC status for various reasons, among them that her very mother had been killed on a MSY mission herself, leaving the daughter with a traumatic experience. This, paired with the awareness of her daughter lying about something consistently, poisoned their relationship. When Nana seemed to vanish, not answering her mother's calls, she cried and moved on.

It can be inferred that in the decade after the Battle of Epsilon Eridani, revealing the existence of magical girls and the MSY to the general public, Ryouko's grandmother was able to put the pieces of her mother's early and sudden death as well as the absences and later disappearance of her daughter Nana together, leaving her with resentment at the whole charade and situation forced upon her decades ago.

Incidentally, this probably led her to try to conceal the existence of Nana to her granddaughter in the hopes of preventing her from contracting.

She left her husband Kuroi Abe, undivorced, her other daughter Nakase and her husband as well as her toddling granddaughter behind and joined the military.

Though it took some time, she reopened contact with Nana once more and was sorry for distrusting her, trying to regain a semblance of a normal relationship with her.

She was stationed in the garrison on one of the Gemini shipyards. During the Kepler-37 Offensive, she led her squad into a warehouse taken over by Cephalopods and died in battle. Her death greatly affected Kuroi Abe.
Shirou Asaka is one of Kyouko's close circle of mentored girls.

Story
Until recently, Asaka spent her time with Patricia von Rohr and Kishida Maki at the Cult of Hope Headquarters in Mitakihara City. After meeting Ryouko, Asaka realized that she had fulfilled the directive she had received from Madoka in her previous vision, and prepared to return to active combat. As of Volume Two, she is stationed within the city of Heliopolis on the planet Apollo, as superior officer of Patricia and Maki, both of whom opted to join her. It took special pleading from Kyouko to Mami to keep them together.

Background
A Brigadier General with a distinguished service record, her career has been on hold ever since she lost her close friend (and lover) Alice in the very battle that won her her most recent promotion, in all likelihood ordering her to her death. A former and current video gamer, she was once a full-time devotee, partly due to social defects on her part, many of which she explicitly rectified with her wish. Later, after the loss of Alice, it is implied that in the depths of her grief she lost herself in full immersion simulations, wiping even her memory of the outside world. It took a vision with Madoka, and a talk with the deceased Alice, for her to reset her bearings. However, on instructions from the Goddess, she waited for a specific event to happen before returning to combat. Shizuki Ryouko brought her that event.

Character
Asaka is blunt-spoken yet charismatic, often the joker in the room—in a certain sense, similar to Kyouko. Nowadays, she appears to be best friends with Patricia von Rohr, another member of the Kyouko clique and, like Alice, part of her training cohort. They appear to have a standard combative, banter-filled friendship. No hints of possible relationship yet. The two of them are also good friends with Kishida Maki.

Design
The current version of Asaka is tall and martial, with braided ponytail and serious demeanor. She holds herself in a firm posture, and has a classically well-shaped figure. It is likely that there were long stretches of her life where she did not look that sober. Her gem is violet and is worn on her right forearm when in magical girl form. She has teleportation powers, but it is mentioned that her powers are unusual and strange. She wields dual daggers, but often carries standard weaponry into combat; indeed, she is a bit of a fan of weaponry in general.

Distinctions
*Akemi Homura medal, for saving an as of yet unnamed colony (the medal was received for the "successful resolution of a seemingly hopeless situation")

The SHERMAN (Super Heavy Exotic-shielded Relativistic MAss driving Nucleus) cannon is the primary gun of the Human battlecruisers. Named after a renowned general of the 19th century, it is the largest payload weapon of the human Navy, with a kinetic energy force equal to 9.6 megatons of TNT. Its use as the main gun of Human battlecruisers is due to its unique ability. When fired, the projectile's exotic matter core produces anomalous gravitational fields that disrupt both FTL and sub-light speed propulsion, fields which can be adjusted by the weapon operator before firing.

A meek and unassertive girl, she has the interesting quality of having a build and height very similar to Ryouko, easing Ryouko’s insecurities about the issue. Contracted in the same week as Ryouko, they land in the same training cohort on New Athens, (as opposed to the other possibility: Mars) and appear to have become bosom friends (and, in Asami's case, something more) over the course of training simulations. She is currently part of the Magi Cæli.

Asami dreamt of being a xenobiologist and shares several personality traits (lack of satisfaction on earth, ambitious dreams, and urge to visit the colonies) with Ryouko, but instead spent her wish repairing discord between her parents, for the sake of her younger brother (she also has a much older brother). Asami has gravity-related powers, can sense gravitational shifts, and wears her hair in an unbraided ponytail. It may be that low gravity environments intoxicate her. Who knows?

Although Asami at first expressed a disinterest in romance, she began (awkwardly) dropping hints about her growing affections to Ryouko during their training, and finally confessed her love at an Acheron hot spring.

She participated in the Kepler-37 Offensive, defending Pollux shipyard on the planet Apollo from Cephalopod forces. As a result, her body was lost and her Soul Gem was recovered by a MedEvac drone. When her body was recovered, she heard the news that Ryouko was speculated dead, and as a result started to fall into despair, which prompted her body to be ejected by the MedEvac drone. Asami's Soul Gem was brought back to Earth, where it was integrated into her backup clone.

Naming Order
I used Japanese name order because that's what it was on Hieronym's posts, but it seems another user prefers Western order. I don't really care which we use, provided that we're consistent about it. Archivist (talk) 18:36, 13 April 2013 (PDT)
: I'd say prefer the usual japanese order, since it best reflects the source material. (also inverting names Just Bugs Me because it's not like you're translating the name, so aufgthsdf but that's not. important.) En (talk) 07:28, 14 April 2013 (PDT)
:: I thought Western audiences would prefer Western naming convention (e.g. Puella Magi wiki), but otherwise my stance is the same as Archivist's. I wouldn't mind Eastern, we can go with that. -Akira (talk) 12:22, 14 April 2013 (PDT)
::: well, my line of thinking is, I really doubt makes all that much of a difference either way, especially if we're putting up redirects anyway, and hieronym's text is english in the first place, so if a person is unfamiliar with name ordering conventions, it tends to make more sense to type it in the way it's written in the text than to invert it without a reason. a person who is familiar with the name order ... probably won't have many problems with it anyway (it's a name, after all—of course, my view on names is, it's not you'd generally mangle the word order in a title if you transliterated it, so why would you mangle the word order in a name). this is how I justify preference in utility, anyway.
It's use as the main gun of the human battlecruisers is due to it's unique ability. When fired, the projectile's exotic matter core produces anomalous gravitational fields that disrupt both FTL and sub-light speed propulsion.

The General Staff is the highest level of military organization in the human Armed Forces, analogous to the General Staffs of many militaries today, or the US Combined Chiefs of Staff. It is the body containing all the most senior military officers, and is responsible for the direction of the war effort. Unusually for a body of such importance, it is composed entirely of humans, though it is advised be several important advisory AIs.

The General Staff usually operates by unanimous consent, but disagreements may be resolved by a majority vote of the Staff. The General Staff answers directly to Governance: Military Affairs, and thereby to Governance itself, but Governance generally tries to avoid interfering in its affairs.

The current Chair of the General Staff is Field Marshal Tomoe Mami. By tradition it is composed of around 20 members. Besides Erwynmark, the confirmed members that have been mentioned are:

*Field Marshal Roland Erwynmark (deceased)
*Field Marshal Sualem
*Field Marshal Tsvangirai
*Field Marshal Porto
*General de Chatillon
*General Alexander
*Fleet Admiral Karishma Anand
*Fleet Admiral Chang
*Fleet Admiral Miller
*Fleet Admiral Feodorovich

Note that while other senior officers have been mentioned, they have not been explicitly said to be part of the General Staff.
Tomoe Mami (巴 マミ Tomoe Mami) is one of the original protagonists from Puella Magi Madoka Magica. In To the Stars, her main role is being the primary mentor of Shizuki Ryouko.

Story
Mami is first introduced while searching for potential magical girls in Mitakihara City. She rescues Ryouko from a demon attack, and is the one to push her into a contract. Mami also provides commentary while watching the Akemi (movie).

Mami contributed greatly to planning a (failed) MagOps attack against a Wormhole Stabilizer in the Kepler-37 System. She, along with Chitose Yuma and Sakura Kyouko, are also the ones investigating mysterious administrative problems (the grief cube shortages and the disappearing Magical Girls) as well as the enigma surrounding Ryouko (the attempt on Ryouko's life, Ryouko's friend Simona del Mago, the suspicious Joanne Valentin, and the surprise attack on the HSS Pierre-Simon Laplace).

Background
Before Reset
Her parents died in a car crash when she was only a child, Mami herself only surviving via a wish to Kyubey. As such, she was forced to learn to fend for herself. She survived solo demon hunts for over a year, taught herself how to form muskets, and mentored Kyouko, Akemi Homura, and Miki Sayaka before the point at which Homura gains the memories of erased timelines.

Ten Year Gap
Before the formation of the MSY, Mami's money was the primary funding that the Four had, and meetings amongst the Four or with other groups were based at her apartment(s), with her serving refreshments.

She nursed an uncharacteristically heavy grudge with Mikuni Oriko, who had gone out of her way to harass her, her territory, and her home. When Oriko died, Mami's only thought was, "I never thought I'd see the day she would go down... I never got to get my revenge."

MSY
One of her aliases during this time was "Tomatsu Mai". It is known that she rotated through many roles, including the title of Chief Diplomat.

Mami was the first Director of the Soul Guard, and served until a mission to eliminate an as of yet unnamed girl finished eating away at her guilt.

After Reveal
After the Battle of Epsilon Eridani, Mami became a Field Marshal and serves on the General Staff. Her biggest accomplishment to date is the Saharan Raid, where she covered Field Marshal Erwynmark's retreat (following a successful assault).

Her flagship is the battlecruiser HSS Georgy Konstantinovich Zhukov.

Character
Mami works hard to project an image of matronly responsibility and has always been the "respectable older sister" figure, as well as the diplomat, of the Mitakihara Four. During the Cold War with SMC, Mami was the only one of the elder Leadership members to take on a conciliatory stance amongst a sea of poker faces.

Mami is an excellent cook, and still prefers to use fresh produce instead of synthesized ones.

TacComp
Mami is equipped with a v2 TacComp named Machina, which acts as her close adviser, secretary, and personal processing core. Mami suspects Machina might be fond of Field Marshal Erwynmark, which has "some possibly disturbing implications".

Titles
Current
*Field Marshal, Army
*Chief, General Staff
*Special Sector Commander, Euphratic Sector
*MSY Military Liaison
*MSY Rules Committee Representative, Mitakihara Special District
*Second Executive, MSY Leadership Committee
*MSY Founder

Past
*Chief Diplomat, MSY
*Director, Soul Guard

Distinctions
*Directorate Citation, for the Battle of Epsilon Eridani (the medal is earned "for contributing to an exceptional degree to the wellbeing of Humanity")
*Defender's Star, First Class, for the Saharan Raid (exact medal requirements unknown)

Field Marshal Roland Erwynmark was the Chief of the General Staff, which put him in a position of nearly supreme military command.

He began as a member of the Volunteers and soon after becoming Brigadier General of Volunteers his decade-long rise in the military hierarchy began. Despite his age he had very much earned his position with his tactical, strategic and logistical skills.

The controversial name of his TacComp v2, Rommel, as well as his flagship Arminius imply a certain martial mindset, or at least reverence to the tactical skills of these historical figures, regardless of their ethical considerations.

On the General Staff Erwynmark was aware of both the abilities and limitations of Magical Girls and was supportive of them in general.

He seemed to have aspirations, most likely romantic, towards Tomoe Mami.

Appearance
Spry, with a boyish face, which might be more of an impression compared to officers in comparable positions of authority rather than actual appearance. While Erwynmark was not movie star handsome, he had a legendary charisma. When nervous, he used to fiddle with his collar tab.

Military
Nearly all of his stripes were earned on the battlefield, which made him the so-called Hero of Aurelia and Sahara, the latter operation's success hinged on very timely intervention by three fleets commandeered by Field Marshal Tomoe Mami. Nevertheless he was the one to realize in the aftermath of the failed enemy attacks on Samsara the current vulnerability and opportunity for a counter-attack on the Sahara Sector.

While his position could be likened to Commander-in-Chief, it is more akin to a chairman of a committee with casual votes, discussions and decisions on plans and strategies.

His flagship was the Battlecruiser HSS Arminius, although he spent quite some time in the Carthago Shipyards, HQ of Orbital Space Command orbiting Earth as well.
Clarisse van Rossum is one of the oldest, if not the oldest Magical Girl alive. Being born sometime in the 19th century (in the Netherlands, if her name is any indication) by now she's one of the few, if not the only, person past 500 years of age. She usually appears to be around 30 years old, though. Her hair is wavy and her face is freckled.

Van Rossum's chosen vocation is historian, with her wish implied to be in the line of "witness historical events". In this vein the extent of her power waxes and wanes with (physical and temporal) proximity to historical events. Furthermore it gives her a feeling as to where something significant will happen, or at least where she ought to be to witness it. As many other ancients she has spent time to expand her magical repertoire as well, giving her the ability of, among others, short range teleportation and telekinesis. These are coupled with the aforementioned proximity to events, though, making some only on the cusp of these historical happenstances available.

Furthermore van Rossum's power includes the ability to record powers and memories of willing or dead persons in a book, which she can call upon in certain cases and places, making her on those occasions a metaphorical Swiss Army Knife of Terror if she so desires.

Van Rossum is a prominent member of the Cult of Hope. Not only does she serve on the Theological Council, but she has personally received multiple visions from the Goddess.
Atsuko Arisu is a Magical Girl specialising in the psychological department of the MHD.

Especially the very old among the magical girl populace are her area of expertise, among them the Mitakihara Four, giving her a lot of inside information. This potential of disaster is countermanded by her very strong sense of professional work ethics, making her a trustworthy confidante.

Albeit she served stints as the MHD director she is currently only a psychiatrist.

She takes some pleasure in often enough being the outwardly only adult in the room.

The one surprise session she had with Akemi Homura led to her fleeing the room crying after being fed some of Akemi's more bleak memories not "cosmically censored".

Appearance
In contrast to many other magical girls Arisu maintains a physical age in her twenties. Her hair is shoulder length and kept in a matronly style.

Shizuki Ryouko is the protagonist of To the Stars and a recently contracted magical girl. Having spent most of her life in Mitakihara City, she has grown weary of Earth's monoculture and hopes to find her place among the stars, whether it be in the colonies, the ongoing war with the Cephalopods, or perhaps something else entirely. Her opportunity to do so finally arrives when she and her friend Simona del Mago are saved from a demon attack in the nick of time by Tomoe Mami, famous magical girl and a recruiter for the Mahou Shoujo Youkai.

She is notable for her status as the product of both the Shizuki and Kuroi Matriarchies (albeit through estranged branches); her tutelage under both Tomoe Mami and Sakura Kyouko, two of the Mitakihara Four; and her record-breaking teleportation range of approximately 200 kilometers.

Although she considers herself rational to the point of cynicism, especially with regard to the military and Governance, she can at times be denser than the average harem lead. She has also some minor self-esteem issues stemming from her body image.

Appearance
For some reason everyone thinks her hair and eyes are green. I have no objections to that. Her hair is long and wavy (think Hitomi’s hair) but a bit more tentacular (if that makes sense). Remember, the hair is mildly self-mobile (and has a drone hanging off of it).

Her face resembles Hitomi (never said explicitly), but slightly sharper-edged, since instead of wearing that 24/7 ojou-sama look, she has a constant serious look to her. It also appears more childish than Hitomi (think Madoka, for example).

As for her figure, she’s short and flat-chested, but otherwise quite physically fit (with implants, this just sort of automatically happens). Casual clothing wise, she favors the kind of things you saw at the party (white dress, modest shirt top), with maybe pants if she’s not feeling too formal. Costume wise, it’s green, it’s frilly, and it has buttons. It resembles Madoka’s, actually, if you read the description, though it’s not quite as girlish. Dress is a lot less poofy and more practical, among other things. Soul gem is five-pointed star at base of neck. When not transformed, five-pointed star on the appropriate finger (middle finger of left hand, if episode 5 is to be believed). Of course, her weapon is an arbalest mounted on one arm, and she is a teleporter.

(The green of her costume matches the green of the aliens quite well.)

Personality
The protagonist Shizuki Ryouko is by all appearances an ordinary girl. Shorter than average, she is constantly worried that her schoolmates don’t take her seriously, and she has consequently learned to conceal whatever girlish tendencies she may have under a cynical outer layer. This is reflective of an overall tendency to worry about her insignificance in the grand scheme of things, and the desire to prove herself. She is frustrated by the seeming banality of life on Earth, and wishes to travel the universe, where she can have meaningful adventures, like her childhood hero Clarisse van Rossum.

More emotional than she admits, she tries to be as rational whenever possible, with mixed success. She is, however, a thoughtful protagonist. When she is engaged, she is unusually focused, to the point of having tunnel vision. When she is unengaged, a part of her is always drifting far away, causing her to pay suboptimal attention to her surroundings. She has little interest in romance, simply because it doesn’t fall into her current set of goals.

In acute crises, she is unlikely to go into hysterics, and indeed may seem level-headed or even cold; this is not indicative of lack of empathy, but simply a core practicality, even in the most extreme cases. In some cases, she can be shockingly blunt-spoken. It is only when her worldview is shaken that she is truly bothered, but she is extremely resilient. These are excellent qualities for a magical girl.

Powers
: "I wish I could leave Earth, and explore this world. I want to go where no one else has gone before and find my place in this universe."
Ryouko's main power is that of teleportation by wormhole. Under normal circumstances, she has a (record-setting) maximum range of 200km - enough to get her into low Earth orbit - but as the limiting factor is her ability to warp space, much larger ranges are theoretically possible depending on the situation. A weakness of her teleportation is that she must teleport herself along with the targets.
*The Akemi Homura Medal, for neutralizing the threat of the cloaked alien reinforcements and teleporting her unit to safety during the Second Wormhole Stabilizer Raid (the medal was earned for 'Successful Resolution of a Seemingly Hopeless Situation'
Chitose Yuma (千歳 ゆま Chitose Yuma) is one of the original protagonists from Puella Magi Oriko Magica. In To the Stars, she is seen mainly as the MSY's primary representative within Governance.

Story
Unlike Tomoe Mami and Sakura Kyouko, Yuma has so far not been portrayed in the first-person, and is usually seen from either Kyouko's or Mami's perspective. Within the primary storyline of To the Stars, she has been most prominently involved in the investigations into the various mysteries of the plot, such as the Grief Cube Discrepancy or the apparently premeditated demon attack on Shizuki Ryouko. She is also seen extensively in flashbacks about the Southern Group.

Background
Southern Group
The child of two abusive parents, Yuma and her parents are attacked by demons when she is nine, an encounter that kills both her parents. Yuma herself is saved by Mikuni Oriko and her Southern Group, who takes her in.

Yuma lives for around two years as part of the Southern Group, sticking out like a sore thumb among a group otherwise composed of the insane, psychopathic, or merely murderous. While Oriko apparently makes an effort to protect her from the influence of the rest of the group, it is not entirely effective. It is unclear how involved Yuma was involved in the atrocities committed by the group, or how much she even knew about these atrocities.

There is evidence that Yuma develops a significant attachment to Oriko, and she speaks of her with the "nee-chan" honorific even centuries later.

Yuma is the only survivor of the Southern Group's apparent demise to a group of demons. While the official account stipulates that Yuma survived on her own, and was subsequently forced to throw herself on the mercy of the Mitakihara Four (then Three), Kyouko's flashback makes care that the Mitakihara Three actively saved her after the death of her former teammates, incapacitating Yuma when it became clear that she in the throes of despair-induced insanity. Afterward, Yuma became the fourth member of the Mitakihara Four.

MSY
Despite the others' attempts to give her a normal childhood, it becomes clear that Yuma's time as part of the Southern Group had a profound effect on her personality. Displaying an early affinity for the bribery and other tasks that were necessary to keep the MSY secret from the government, she becomes director of MSY Governmental Affairs, gaining a reputation for a Utilitarian ends-justify-the-means morality that often puts her at odds with Kyouko and Mami.

She becomes the first director of the Black Heart, serving there for an unknown period of time before returning to Governmental Affairs. She maintains a prominent position in the governments of the world, eventually managing to serve as both a committee member of the United Front Emergency Defense Committee and Governance: Public Order.

After Reveal
After the MSY's existence became known to the world at large, Yuma became the primary liaison between the MSY and the Directorate, addressing the organization on several notable occasions. Eventually, she receives the position of Governance: Magical Girls, a Directorate level Representative position. Since she is the first to hold the position, she helps design and raise the newly-created Governance: Magical Girls Advisory AI (MG for short).

Character
Yuma exploits her ability to manipulate her body strongly, adopting a childish body soon after acquiring a Governance position, which she claims gets others off-guard. While her typical demeanor is relatively childish, especially around the other members of Mitakihara Four, it barely covers a much more calculating, thoughtful personality.

As a member of Governance, Yuma now carries very extensive neural modifications, including a Permanent Awareness Module and numerous other modules allowing her to participate in Governance's operations. At any given moment, the majority of her consciousness is devoted to attending various Governance meetings. Those meetings she does not directly attend, are attended by MG, whose consciousness she is intertwined with on a neural level. In the story, it is described as being similar to marriage.
