In the tumultuous time afterward, she experimented, turning out to be lesbian and allowing herself to be seduced by Kyouko, who later withdrew her from front-line combat.

Maki is first introduced as one of Emergency Response Team members that destroyed the demons that had attacked [[Ryouko]]. Later, she is revealed to have been the first person in the Cult of Hope to have drawn [[Kaname Madoka|the goddess]] with long, overflowing pink hair at the insistence of Shirou Asaka, as opposed to the generically long and white it was assumed to be before.

When Asaka decides to re-enter the war, Maki follows her and [[Patricia von Rohr]], refusing Kyouko’s advice of continuing to stay back from the front. This precipitates a catastrophic argument and break-up. It turns out that this is due to having picked up on her role as a Sayaka-replacement, and her dissatisfaction with this arrangement and Kyouko’s deliberate emotional distance. She is last shown to have been stationed on [[Heliopolis]], participating in retaking a sniper-filled strongpoint.

==Personality==
Maki is bit of a dreamer. As seen with her wish, painting is an important aspect of her; her desire to draw whole-heartedly is the reason escaped from her parents, and part of the reason she did not stay with Kyouko. She also does not appears to be a morning person (or at least, not a getting-out-of-bed-gracefully person).

==MG Costume & Abilities==
Maki appears similar to Miki Sayaka; in her magical girl costume however, she is usually seen with two one-handed swords, rather than just one, and has bracers and leg armor that Sayaka lacked, as well as an armored breastplate and skirt.

Her power is conjuration, possibly stemming from her artistic talent. So far she was shown to be capable of materializing ghost missiles, other magical girls, and giant black sheets. It is unknown what limit or conditions there may be to her ability.

Her theme color is blue, and her gem takes the shape of a cross while in costume.

Yuma lives for around two years as part of the Southern Group, sticking out like a sore thumb among a group otherwise composed of the insane, psychopathic, or merely murderous. While Oriko apparently makes an effort to protect her from the influence of the rest of the group, it is not entirely effective. It is unclear how involved Yuma was involved in the atrocities committed by the group, or how much she even knew about these atrocities.

There is evidence that Yuma develops a significant attachment to Oriko, and she speaks of her with the "nee-chan" honorific even centuries later.

Yuma is the only survivor of the Southern Group's apparent demise to a group of demons. While the official account stipulates that Yuma survived on her own, and was subsequently forced to throw herself on the mercy of the [[Mitakihara Four]] (then Three), Kyouko's flashback shows that the Mitakihara Three actively saved her after the death of her former teammates, incapacitating Yuma when it became clear that she was mired in the throes of despair-induced insanity. Afterward, Yuma became the fourth member of the [[Mitakihara Four]].

Later on, it is revealed in Chapter 44 that it was Yuma herself who orchestrated the near-eradication of the Southern Group, by use of doctored grief cubes to spawn Demons that would overwhelm the Southern Group, as well as strategically disseminating information on Oriko's visions that turned its members against each other.

Despite the others' attempts to give her a normal childhood, it becomes clear that Yuma's time as part of the Southern Group had a profound effect on her personality. Her parents died in a car crash when she was only a child, Mami herself only surviving via a wish to [[Kyubey]]. As such, she was forced to learn to fend for herself. She survived solo demon hunts for over a year, taught herself how to form muskets, and mentored Kyouko, [[Akemi Homura]], and [[Miki Sayaka]] before the point at which Homura gains the memories of erased timelines.

Before the formation of the MSY, Mami's money was the primary funding that the Four had, and meetings amongst the Four or with other groups were based at her apartment(s), with her serving refreshments.

She nursed an uncharacteristically heavy grudge with [[Mikuni Oriko]], who had gone out of her way to harass her, her territory, and her home. When Oriko died, Mami's only thought was, "I never thought I'd see the day she would go down... I never got to get my revenge."

[[Akiyama Akari]] was a [[Magical Girl]] and girlfriend to Tomoe Mami. She exhausted her soul gem after the plane they were in was struck down by a bomb planted by a stray group of North Korean Magical Girls. The trauma of witnessing the decaying of Akari's soul gem caused Mami to [[reformat]] herself, which would naturally degrade after a few centuries.

Centuries later, the reformat was reversed by Homura, giving evidence that Homura was alive.

==Character==
Mami works hard to project an image of matronly responsibility and has always been the "respectable older sister" figure, as well as the diplomat, of the [[Mitakihara Four]]. During the Cold War with [[SMC]], Mami was the only one of the elder Leadership members to take on a conciliatory stance amongst a sea of poker faces.

Mami is an excellent cook, and still prefers to use fresh produce instead of [[synthesized]] ones.

==[[TacComp]]==
Mami is equipped with a v2 TacComp named Machina, which acts as her close adviser, secretary, and personal processing core. Mami suspects Machina might be fond of Field Marshal Erwynmark, which has "some possibly disturbing implications".

In a vision, Mami learns that Machina is sentient (ref: {{ch|51}}). Machina portrays herself as very young (smaller than Yuma), in contrast to [[Ryouko]]'s TacComp [[Clarisse]] who acts about the same age as Ryouko. It breathed new life into Mami's life. Machina and Clarisse are the two TacComps so far who have witnessed a vision.

The '''Incubators''' are a race of extraterrestrial aliens who grant one [[Magical Girl#Wish-making|wish]] for girls with magical potential, in exchange turning them into Magical Girls. Their ultimate goal is to combat the universe's entropy levels.

So far only two distinct Incubators have been identified: [[Kyubey]] and the unnamed Incubator from {{Ch|2}}.

As prepubescent human girls have proven to be the best source of energy available, the histories of Incubators and humans have been intricately linked. It has been implied that human innovation and technology have advanced so far and so fast only because they have been spurred on by the wishes made by girls throughout the ages.

The earliest suspected interaction between girl and Incubator is the discovery of fire.

==Methodology==
The details of their technology and its relation with magic are not wholly understood (even to the Incubators themselves, when regarding magic). However, it is known that they harness the emotional energy generated by prepubescent human girls when they are converted into Magical Girls, and that they grant one wish or one "miracle" in return. They are also tasked with consuming Grief Cube, preferably saturated ones, in order to make sure [[demons]] do not spawn.

Incubators, before the formation of [[MSY]], approached girls with potential on their own to pitch their offers, relying on two main sales points: the ability to grant one "miracle" of any kind (within reach of the girl's own "karmic destiny") and what girls as a whole would consider to be a "cute" appearance. They are responsible for explaining all aspects of a Magical Girl, including powers, conditions, and responsibilities, and ''especially'' including the fact that a Magical Girl's soul is transferred to her Soul Gem. Other than this, however, an Incubator is free to pursue a contract in any way they please, such as but not limited to gaining a position of trust by being sympathetic and urging on on the teenage impulses of potential contractees. There have been hints that Incubators deliberately ''engineered'' a situation that would force someone to become a Magical Girl, in the past. Most of these methods have, by this point, are now the responsibilities of the MSY and have been toned down.

Traditionally the Incubators had taught, guided, and coordinated Magical Girls when there were no tutors to do so, attempting to prolong each girl's lives as long as possible. They are ordinarily neutral in conflicts between Magical Girls, as their objective is to efficiently retrieve as much emotional energy as possible with concern for little else (though a notable exception would be [[Mikuni Oriko]] and her group, considering their efficiency in killing ''other'' Magical Girls). Since the advent of the MSY the Incubators often work in concert with them, as their presence have been shown to have extremely positive effects on MG longevity as well as a positive correlation with recruitment numbers.

Incubators resemble white cats with long, floppy ears, each encircled by a golden ring. They have a teardrop-shaped mark on their back that opens to allow for consumption of Grief Cubes. In general, younger Magical Girls view and treat Incubators as the traditional, cute and cuddly ''Mahou Shoujo'' anime mascots. [[Karina Schei]] and [[Shen Xiao Long]] even teases Kyubey in jest, on one occasion<ref>{{Ch|6}}</ref>. Older Magical Girls appear to be more aware of the Incubators' manipulative and cruel nature.

Reception from the general population is less clear. It is known that the radically conservative sectors equates them to traditional demons, reminiscent of the saying "a deal with the devil". Her parents died in a car crash when she was only a child, Mami herself only surviving via a wish to [[Kyubey]]. As such, she was forced to learn to fend for herself. She survived solo demon hunts for over a year, taught herself how to form muskets, and mentored Kyouko, [[Akemi Homura]], and [[Miki Sayaka]] before the point at which Homura gains the memories of erased timelines.

===Ten Year Gap===
Before the formation of the MSY, Mami's money was the primary funding that the Four had, and meetings amongst the Four or with other groups were based at her apartment(s), with her serving refreshments.

She nursed an uncharacteristically heavy grudge with [[Mikuni Oriko]], who had gone out of her way to harass her, her territory, and her home. When Oriko died, Mami's only thought was, "I never thought I'd see the day she would go down... I never got to get my revenge."

[[Akiyama Akari]] was a [[Magical Girl]] and girlfriend to Tomoe Mami. She exhausted her soul gem after the plane they were in was struck down by a bomb planted by a stray group of North Korean Magical Girls. The trauma of witnessing the decaying of Akari's soul gem caused Mami to [[reformat]] herself, which would naturally degrade after a few centuries.

Centuries later, the reformat was reversed by Homura, giving evidence that Homura was alive.

==Character==
Mami works hard to project an image of matronly responsibility and has always been the "respectable older sister" figure, as well as the diplomat, of the [[Mitakihara Four]]. During the Cold War with [[SMC]], Mami was the only one of the elder Leadership members to take on a conciliatory stance amongst a sea of poker faces.

Mami is an excellent cook, and still prefers to use fresh produce instead of [[synthesized]] ones.

Mami is equipped with a v2 TacComp named Machina, which acts as her close adviser, secretary, and personal processing core. Mami suspects Machina might be fond of Field Marshal Erwynmark, which has "some possibly disturbing implications".

In a vision, Mami learns that Machina is sentient (ref: {{ch|51}}). Machina portrays herself as very young (smaller than Yuma), in contrast to [[Ryouko]]'s TacComp [[Clarisse]] who acts about the same age as Ryouko. It breathed new life into Mami's life. Machina and Clarisse are the two TacComps so far who have witnessed a vision.

A Brigadier General with a distinguished service record, her career has been on hold ever since she lost her close friend (and lover) [[Alice]] in the very battle that won her her most recent promotion, in all likelihood ordering her to her death. A former and current video gamer, she was once a full-time devotee, partly due to social defects on her part, many of which she explicitly rectified with her wish. Later, after the loss of Alice, it is implied that in the depths of her grief she lost herself in full immersion simulations, wiping even her memory of the outside world. It took a vision with Madoka, and a talk with the deceased Alice, for her to reset her bearings. However, on instructions from the Goddess, she waited for a specific event to happen before returning to combat. [[Shizuki Ryouko]] brought her that event.

Asaka is blunt-spoken yet charismatic, often the joker in the room—in a certain sense, similar to Kyouko. Nowadays, she appears to be best friends with Patricia von Rohr, another member of the Kyouko clique and, like Alice, part of her training cohort. They appear to have a standard combative, banter-filled friendship. No hints of possible relationship yet. The two of them are also good friends with Kishida Maki.

==Design==
The current version of Asaka is tall and martial, with braided ponytail and serious demeanor. She holds herself in a firm posture, and has a classically well-shaped figure. It is likely that there were long stretches of her life where she did not look that sober. Her gem is violet and is worn on her right forearm when in magical girl form. She has teleportation powers, but it is mentioned that her powers are unusual and strange. She wields dual daggers, but often carries standard weaponry into combat; indeed, she is a bit of a fan of weaponry in general.

Shizuki Sayaka is the founder of the Shizuki Matriarchy and as one of the old girls still around and active in the politics of the [[Mahou Shoujo Youkai]].

Daughter to [[Kamijou Kyousuke]] and [[Shizuki Hitomi]] she only later adopted her mother's maiden name. Even though she wasn't a [[Magical Girl]] at the time of the MSY's founding, she soon joined and her family became one of the early financial backers. [[Shizuki Ryouko]] descended from her, nine generations down the line.

As the founder of and being backed by a powerful [[Matriarchy]] she has distinct clout and power in the MSY, in part due to her repeated leadership position in MSY Finance, as well as her success therein.

During the MSY's expansive phase, when rival organizations inspired by the very MSY cropped up, Shizuki Sayaka was a stout supporter of hostile takeovers of the rivals, be that by financial means, which she was at the time heading, or other.

The Shizuki family crest is two hands holding up a crown almost in a presenting manner.

She spends most of her time on [[Earth]].

Sayaka and [[Kuroi Kana]] were best friends, once, but not anymore, likely due to the latter's necessary actions as part of the [[Soul Guard]]. Sayaka is also the butt of a one-sided feud by [[Sakura Kyouko]] she can't seem to understand but suspects her mother to be the reason.

Daughter of a ruined and corrupt politician she spent the time directly after contracting tracking down and exposing her father's associates. Her focus of vengeance soon expanded to criminals of all sorts and perpetrator of the smallest misdemeanour, slipping further into insanity, albeit keeping some semblance of grip in contrast to her later associates.

That was the time she started working together with [[Kure Kirika]] in targeting Mami and Kyouko and making their life hell, constantly prodding into their territory and poaching their demon kills. Soon after [[Miroko Mikuru]] and [[Hinata Aina]] joined the two, forming the Southern Group and thus escalating the conflict with the [[Mitakihara Four]].

She introduced [[Chitose Yuma]], newly contracted, as a fifth member into the group and mentored her.

Of the four of the original group, Mikuni Oriko was the sanest, which is not as hard as it may seem, and also the mastermind behind the groups formation and operation. In this role she was the James Moriarty befitting of [[Akemi Homura]]'s Sherlock Holmes. The somewhat random incursions grew concerted, as did the killings of magical girls. The murders and inefficient grief cube harvesting led to the [[Incubator]]s regretting Oriko's recruitment. The Southern Group's activities only stopped when they were nearly completely exterminated by demons, with Yuma the only survivor. Unbeknownst to the public, it was Yuma who orchestrated the fall of the Southern Group; this fact is known only by the Mitakihara Four and [[Shizuki Ryouko|Shizuki Ryouko.]] Oriko, who shattered her own gem, caused Yuma to go into a guilt-ridden, self-destructive state. Mami, Kyouko, and [[Akemi Homura]] would then save Yuma.

As an historical figure she is rather ambiguous – especially considering her power. It is questionable if all of her actions were truly random and unjustified murder of innocent people or of she mayhaps used her power to weed out detrimental futures. The recruitment of Yuma, who did not really match the deranged psychological make-up of the rest of the group, makes for conjecture on Oriko's reasoning.

When the [[Goddess]] sent Oriko to meet Mami, Oriko apologized for her actions, regretting how she wasted her life.

== Costume and Abilites ==

Oriko wore a white costume.

She was able to transmit her prescient knowledge telepathically, greatly increasing the combat effectiveness of her group. It is assumed she was the most powerful precog of her generation, and incidentally also the last. Even then, when she was at the brink of her own death, she could only perceive darkness when trying to pierce the veil of death.

The child of two abusive parents, Yuma and her parents are attacked by demons when she is nine, an encounter that kills both her parents. Yuma herself is saved by [[Mikuni Oriko]] and her Southern Group, who takes her in.

Yuma lives for around two years as part of the Southern Group, sticking out like a sore thumb among a group otherwise composed of the insane, psychopathic, or merely murderous. While Oriko apparently makes an effort to protect her from the influence of the rest of the group, it is not entirely effective. It is unclear how involved Yuma was involved in the atrocities committed by the group, or how much she even knew about these atrocities.

There is evidence that Yuma develops a significant attachment to Oriko, and she speaks of her with the "nee-chan" honorific even centuries later.

Yuma is the only survivor of the Southern Group's apparent demise to a group of demons. While the official account stipulates that Yuma survived on her own, and was subsequently forced to throw herself on the mercy of the [[Mitakihara Four]] (then Three), Kyouko's flashback shows that the Mitakihara Three actively saved her after the death of her former teammates, incapacitating Yuma when it became clear that she was mired in the throes of despair-induced insanity. Afterward, Yuma became the fourth member of the [[Mitakihara Four]].

Later on, it is revealed in Chapter 44 that it was Yuma herself who orchestrated the near-eradication of the Southern Group, by use of doctored grief cubes to spawn Demons that would overwhelm the Southern Group, as well as strategically disseminating information on Oriko's visions that turned its members against each other.

===MSY===
Despite the others' attempts to give her a normal childhood, it becomes clear that Yuma's time as part of the Southern Group had a profound effect on her personality. Displaying an early affinity for the bribery and other tasks that were necessary to keep the [[MSY]] secret from the government, she becomes director of MSY [[Governmental Affairs]], gaining a reputation for a Utilitarian ends-justify-the-means morality that often puts her at odds with Kyouko and Mami.

She becomes the first director of the [[Black Heart]], serving there for an unknown period of time before returning to Governmental Affairs. She maintains a prominent position in the governments of the world, eventually managing to serve as both a committee member of the [[United Front]] [[Emergency Defense Committee]] and ''Governance: Public Order''.

===After Reveal===
After the MSY's existence became known to the world at large, Yuma became the primary liaison between the MSY and the [[Directorate]], addressing the organization on several notable occasions. Eventually, she receives the position of ''Governance: Magical Girls'', a Directorate level [[Representative]] position. Since she is the first to hold the position, she helps design and raise the newly-created [[Governance: Magical Girls Advisory AI]] (MG for short).

Yuma exploits her ability to manipulate her body strongly, adopting a childish body soon after acquiring a Governance position, which she claims gets others off-guard. While her typical demeanor is relatively childish, especially around the other members of Mitakihara Four, it barely covers a much more calculating, thoughtful personality.

As a member of Governance, Yuma now carries very extensive neural modifications, including a [[Permanent Awareness Module]] and numerous other modules allowing her to participate in Governance's operations. At any given moment, the majority of her consciousness is devoted to attending various Governance meetings. Those meetings she does not directly attend, are attended by [[MG]], whose consciousness she is intertwined with on a neural level. In the story, it is described as being similar to marriage.

Nevertheless he was the one to realize in the aftermath of the failed enemy attacks on Samsara the current vulnerability and opportunity for a counter-attack on the [[Sahara Sector]].

While his position could be likened to Commander-in-Chief, it is more akin to a chairman of a committee with casual votes, discussions and decisions on plans and strategies.

Akiyama Akari was a [[Magical Girl]], member of the rare Soul Mage class, researcher of the energetical aspects of magic use, and girlfriend to [[Tomoe Mami]].

They became enamored as Akari used her magic to lift the love spell that [[Choi Seoyun]] had casted upon Mami and to transfer it to herself, but afterwards they voluntarily developed a romantic relationship. She then became Mami's mentor on [[telepathy]], which made their bond even tighter.

As a researcher of "fundamental topics like corruption, the soul-body link, the despair spiral", she carried on the scientific work of [[Mikuni Oriko]]. She was a direct subordinate of the then head of the Science Division of the [[MSY]], [[Chitose Yuma]], but she had relative autonomy as to the topics of her studies. Her subordinates included [[Sadachi Shiori]] and other Magical Girls.

She died in a plane crash caused by a terrorist attack targeting Mami. It was orchestrated by a stray group of North Korean Magical Girls that were dissatisfied with the advance of the MSY over their territory. As the power of her [[Soul Gem]] ran out, she and Mami were in close telepathic communication, which allowed Mami to witness firsthand the decay of a Soul Gem and so gain great insight into the working of the [[Law of Cycles]]. Her wish was "I just want to make a difference. I wish to. All of this, all of our suffering, all our experiences. It must all be worth it.", and so it was fulfilled at the moment of her death.

==System==
A magical girl is first created when a human with potential, invariably a female between the ages of 9-20, is offered what is termed a [[Contract]] by an Incubator. The girl makes a wish, performing a one-time reality distortion of their choice, while the Incubator simultaneously extracts their soul, encasing it in a gem called a [[Soul Gem]]. The girl acquires a range of magical powers, but the use of these powers imposes a cost in the form of corruption to their soul gem, which appears as a blackness within the light emitted by the gem. A meek and unassertive girl, she has the interesting quality of having a build and height very similar to [[Shizuki Ryouko|Ryouko]], easing [[Shizuki Ryouko|Ryouko]]’s insecurities about the issue. Contracted in the same week as [[Shizuki Ryouko|Ryouko]], they land in the same training cohort on New Athens, (as opposed to the other possibility: Mars) and appear to have become bosom friends (and, in Asami's case, something more) over the course of training simulations. She is currently part of the Magi Cæli.

Asami dreamt of being a xenobiologist and shares several personality traits (lack of satisfaction on earth, ambitious dreams, and urge to visit the colonies) with [[Shizuki Ryouko|Ryouko]], but instead spent her wish repairing discord between her parents, for the sake of her younger brother (she also has a much older brother). Asami has gravity-related powers, can sense gravitational shifts, and wears her hair in an unbraided ponytail. It may be that low gravity environments intoxicate her. Who knows?

Although Asami at first expressed a disinterest in romance, she began (awkwardly) dropping hints about her growing affections to [[Shizuki Ryouko|Ryouko]] during their training, and finally confessed her love at an Acheron hot spring.

She participated in the [[Kepler-37 Offensive]], defending Pollux shipyard on the planet Apollo from Cephalopod forces. As a result, her body was lost and her Soul Gem was recovered by a MedEvac drone. When her body was recovered, she heard the news that [[Shizuki Ryouko|Ryouko]] was speculated dead, and as a result started to fall into despair, which prompted her body to be ejected by the MedEvac drone. Asami's Soul Gem was brought back to Earth, where it was integrated into her backup clone, whose growth was accelerated by the inclusion of body parts recovered from her original body.

She is surprised by Ryouko's attendance to her resurrection and desperately holds onto her, as it becomes increasingly clear that she might not have any home to return to. She is delighted however when Ryouko agrees to be her girlfriend and when Ryouko brings the two to visit the Ribbon, the Goddess gives her direct relationship advice.
