For some reason everyone thinks her hair and eyes are green. I have no objections to that. Her hair is long and wavy (think Hitomi’s hair) but a bit more tentacular (if that makes sense). Remember, the hair is mildly self-mobile (and has a drone hanging off of it).

Her face resembles Hitomi (never said explicitly), but slightly sharper-edged, since instead of wearing that 24/7 ojou-sama look, she has a constant serious look to her. It also appears more childish than Hitomi (think Madoka, for example).

As for her figure, she’s short and flat-chested, but otherwise quite physically fit (with implants, this just sort of automatically happens). Casual clothing wise, she favors the kind of things you saw at the party (white dress, modest shirt top), with maybe pants if she’s not feeling too formal. Costume wise, it’s green, it’s frilly, and it has buttons. It resembles Madoka’s, actually, if you read the description, though it’s not quite as girlish. Dress is a lot less poofy and more practical, among other things. Soul gem is five-pointed star at base of neck. When not transformed, five-pointed star on the appropriate finger (middle finger of left hand, if episode 5 is to be believed). More emotional than she admits, she tries to be as rational whenever possible, with mixed success. She is, however, a thoughtful protagonist. When she is engaged, she is unusually focused, to the point of having tunnel vision. When she is unengaged, a part of her is always drifting far away, causing her to pay suboptimal attention to her surroundings. She has little interest in romance, simply because it doesn’t fall into her current set of goals.

In acute crises, she is unlikely to go into hysterics, and indeed may seem level-headed or even cold; this is not indicative of lack of empathy, but simply a core practicality, even in the most extreme cases. In some cases, she can be shockingly blunt-spoken. It is only when her worldview is shaken that she is truly bothered, but she is extremely resilient. These are excellent qualities for a magical girl.

For some reason everyone thinks her hair and eyes are green. I have no objections to that. Her hair is long and wavy (think Hitomi’s hair) but a bit more tentacular (if that makes sense). Remember, the hair is mildly self-mobile (and has a drone hanging off of it).

Her face resembles Hitomi (never said explicitly), but slightly sharper-edged, since instead of wearing that 24/7 ojou-sama look, she has a constant serious look to her. It also appears more childish than Hitomi (think Madoka, for example).

As for her figure, she’s short and flat-chested, but otherwise quite physically fit (with implants, this just sort of automatically happens). Casual clothing wise, she favors the kind of things you saw at the party (white dress, modest shirt top), with maybe pants if she’s not feeling too formal. Costume wise, it’s green, it’s frilly, and it has buttons. It resembles Madoka’s, actually, if you read the description, though it’s not quite as girlish. Dress is a lot less poofy and more practical, among other things. Soul gem is five-pointed star at base of neck. When not transformed, five-pointed star on the appropriate finger (middle finger of left hand, if episode 5 is to be believed). Of course, her weapon is an arbalest mounted on one arm, and she is a teleporter.

Shorter than average, she is constantly worried that her schoolmates don’t take her seriously, and she has consequently learned to conceal whatever girlish tendencies she may have under a cynical outer layer.This is reflective of an overall tendency to worry about her insignificance in the grand scheme of things, and the desire to prove herself. She is frustrated by the seeming banality of life on Earth, and wishes to travel the universe, where she can have meaningful adventures, like her childhood hero Clarisse van Rossum.

More emotional than she admits, she tries to be as rational whenever possible, with mixed success. She is, however, a thoughtful protagonist. When she is engaged, she is unusually focused, to the point of having tunnel vision. When she is unengaged, a part of her is always drifting far away, causing her to pay suboptimal attention to her surroundings. She has little interest in romance, simply because it doesn’t fall into her current set of goals.

In acute crises, she is unlikely to go into hysterics, and indeed may seem level-headed or even cold; this is not indicative of lack of empathy, but simply a core practicality, even in the most extreme cases. In some cases, she can be shockingly blunt-spoken. It is only when her worldview is shaken that she is truly bothered, but she is extremely resilient. These are excellent qualities for a magical girl.

A meek and unassertive girl, she has the interesting quality of having a build and height very similar to [[Shizuki Ryouko|Ryouko]], easing [[Shizuki Ryouko|Ryouko]]’s insecurities about the issue. Contracted in the same week as [[Shizuki Ryouko|Ryouko]], they land in the same training cohort on New Athens, (as opposed to the other possibility: Mars) and appear to have become bosom friends (and, in Asami's case, something more) over the course of training simulations. She is currently part of the Magi Cæli.

Asami dreamt of being a xenobiologist and shares several personality traits (lack of satisfaction on earth, ambitious dreams, and urge to visit the colonies) with [[Shizuki Ryouko|Ryouko]], but instead spent her wish repairing discord between her parents, for the sake of her younger brother (she also has a much older brother). Asami has gravity-related powers, can sense gravitational shifts, and wears her hair in an unbraided ponytail. It may be that low gravity environments intoxicate her. Who knows?

Although Asami at first expressed a disinterest in romance, she began (awkwardly) dropping hints about her growing affections to [[Shizuki Ryouko|Ryouko]] during their training, and finally confessed her love at an Acheron hot spring.

She participated in the [[Kepler-37 Offensive]], defending Pollux shipyard on the planet Apollo from Cephalopod forces. As a result, her body was lost and her Soul Gem was recovered by a MedEvac drone. When her body was recovered, she heard the news that [[Shizuki Ryouko|Ryouko]] was speculated dead, and as a result started to fall into despair, which prompted her body to be ejected by the MedEvac drone. Asami's Soul Gem was brought back to Earth, where it was integrated into her backup clone, whose growth was accelerated by the inclusion of body parts recovered from her original body.

She should look like a pleasant person, but her eyes should be sharp, and give the vague impression that she’s nervous about something.

She has medium length hair. I’d say a little above shoulder level. Standard black hair/brown eyes. (yeah I shouldn’t have left out those details) Better endowed than anyone except Mami (given her age). Except for the dark skin, she’s very much the Spanish beauty, so long-ish face, somewhat prominent nose and cheekbones. I didn’t quite want to describe it like that, because I’m not sure it gets well with anime art styles. Having spent most of her life in [[Mitakihara City]], she has grown weary of [[Earth|Earth's]] [[monoculture]] and hopes to find her place among the stars, whether it be in the colonies, the ongoing war with the [[Cephalopods]], or perhaps something else entirely. Her opportunity to do so finally arrives when she and her friend [[Simona del Mago]] are saved from a demon attack in the nick of time by [[Tomoe Mami]], famous [[magical girl]] and a leader of the [[Mahou Shoujo Youkai]].

She is notable for her status as the product of both the [[Shizuki Matriarchy|Shizuki]] and [[Kuroi Matriarchy|Kuroi Matriarchies]] (albeit through estranged branches); her tutelage under both [[Tomoe Mami]] and [[Sakura Kyouko]], two of the [[Mitakihara Four]]; and her record-breaking teleportation range of approximately 200 kilometers.

Although she considers herself rational to the point of cynicism, especially with regard to the military and [[Governance]], she is rather less insightful when it comes to her own life and relationships.

==Appearance==
For some reason everyone thinks her hair and eyes are green. I have no objections to that. Her hair is long and wavy (think Hitomi’s hair) but a bit more tentacular (if that makes sense). Remember, the hair is mildly self-mobile (and has a drone hanging off of it).

Her face resembles Hitomi (never said explicitly), but slightly sharper-edged, since instead of wearing that 24/7 ojou-sama look, she has a constant serious look to her. It also appears more childish than Hitomi (think Madoka, for example).

As for her figure, she’s short and flat-chested, but otherwise quite physically fit (with implants, this just sort of automatically happens). Casual clothing wise, she favors the kind of things you saw at the party (white dress, modest shirt top), with maybe pants if she’s not feeling too formal. Costume wise, it’s green, it’s frilly, and it has buttons. It resembles Madoka’s, actually, if you read the description, though it’s not quite as girlish. Dress is a lot less poofy and more practical, among other things. Soul gem is five-pointed star at base of neck. When not transformed, five-pointed star on the appropriate finger (middle finger of left hand, if episode 5 is to be believed). Of course, her weapon is an arbalest mounted on one arm, and she is a teleporter.

(The green of her costume matches the green of the aliens quite well.)

The protagonist Shizuki Ryouko is by all appearances an ordinary girl. Shorter than average, she is constantly worried that her schoolmates don’t take her seriously, and she has consequently learned to conceal whatever girlish tendencies she may have under a cynical outer layer.This is reflective of an overall tendency to worry about her insignificance in the grand scheme of things, and the desire to prove herself. She is frustrated by the seeming banality of life on Earth, and wishes to travel the universe, where she can have meaningful adventures, like her childhood hero Clarisse van Rossum.

More emotional than she admits, she tries to be as rational whenever possible, with mixed success. She is, however, a thoughtful protagonist. When she is engaged, she is unusually focused, to the point of having tunnel vision. When she is unengaged, a part of her is always drifting far away, causing her to pay suboptimal attention to her surroundings. She has little interest in romance, simply because it doesn’t fall into her current set of goals.

In acute crises, she is unlikely to go into hysterics, and indeed may seem level-headed or even cold; this is not indicative of lack of empathy, but simply a core practicality, even in the most extreme cases. In some cases, she can be shockingly blunt-spoken. It is only when her worldview is shaken that she is truly bothered, but she is extremely resilient. These are excellent qualities for a magical girl.

Shizuki Sayaka is the founder of the Shizuki Matriarchy and as one of the old girls still around and active in the politics of the [[Mahou Shoujo Youkai]].

Daughter to [[Kamijou Kyousuke]] and [[Shizuki Hitomi]] she only later adopted her mother's maiden name. Even though she wasn't a [[Magical Girl]] at the time of the MSY's founding, she soon joined and her family became one of the early financial backers. [[Shizuki Ryouko]] descended from her, nine generations down the line.

As the founder of and being backed by a powerful [[Matriarchy]] she has distinct clout and power in the MSY, in part due to her repeated leadership position in MSY Finance, as well as her success therein.

During the MSY's expansive phase, when rival organizations inspired by the very MSY cropped up, Shizuki Sayaka was a stout supporter of hostile takeovers of the rivals, be that by financial means, which she was at the time heading, or other.

She spends most of her time on [[Earth]].

Resembling her mother strongly, she nevertheless has a penchant for flashy dresses, explicitly so, albeit she mellowed it down over the centuries. She can be very aggressive when pursuing a goal she strongly agrees with and is aggressively defensive of her department.

Sayaka and [[Kuroi Kana]] were best friends, once, but not anymore, likely due to the latter's necessary actions as part of the [[Soul Guard]]. Sayaka is als the butt of a one-sided feud by [[Sakura Kyouko]] she can't seem to understand but suspects her mother to be the reason.

In her dying moments she won the love of Kyoukou, though.

Since her historical significance is not widely known, nor expanded upon by the surviving members of the Mitakihara Four, she is largely known for the impact her death had on Homura, since at this point the latter's memories of the previous loops were restored.

With the exception of a single picture in Kyouko's possession no image of her remains. The memory and impact of her remains, though, especially with and by Kyoukou, for example in naming places and buildings after her like the Miki Sayaka High School (attended by [[Okamura Yuu]]).

== Costume and Abilities ==

Sayaka's costume was a blue and white combination with a short, asymmetric skirt and a white, knee-length cape.

Somewhat related to her wish she had extraordinary regenerative abilities surpassing those of regular magical girls, allowing her to fight with more disregard to her personal safety, akin to a berserker state.

Being born sometime in the 19th century (in the Netherlands, if her name is any indication) by now she's one of the few, if not the only, person past 500 years of age. She usually appears to be around 30 years old, though. Her hair is wavy and her face is freckled.

Van Rossum's chosen vocation is historian, with her wish implied to be in the line of "witness historical events". In this vein the extent of her power waxes and wanes with (physical and temporal) proximity to historical events. Furthermore it gives her a feeling as to where something significant will happen, or at least where she ought to be to witness it. As many other ancients she has spent time to expand her magical repertoire as well, giving her the ability of, among others, short range teleportation and telekinesis. These are coupled with the aforementioned proximity to events, though, making some only on the cusp of these historical happenstances available.

Furthermore van Rossum's power includes the ability to record powers and memories of willing or dead persons in a book, which she can call upon in certain cases and places, making her on those occasions a metaphorical Swiss Army Knife of Terror if she so desires.

Van Rossum is a prominent member of the [[Cult of Hope]]. Not only does she serve on the Theological Council, but she has personally received multiple visions from [[Kaname Madoka|the Goddess]].

Thus far, Kana has been seen primarily in the background, in either her role as Director of the Black Heart or bickering with [[Shizuki Sayaka]] and [[Sakura Kyouko]], particularly with regards to gaining influence over [[Ryouko]], presumably with the intent of pulling her fully into the matriarchy.

Kana appears to keep careful tabs on every branch of her family, and feels it keenly when one of her descendants dies in the failed raid on the [[Wormhole Stabilizer]] in the [[Kepler-37 System]].

==Background==
Kana was one of the [[MSY Founder]]s, and one of the five representatives to sign the original [[MSY Charter]]. A member of the [[University Area Group]], it is possible that she was once a university student. Her group ran a food stand at the University to raise money, and she was personally one of the more enthusiastic about [[Akemi Homura]]'s future ideas for MSY Business, raising the possibility that she was heavily involved in the early stages.

Later on, she became the first Director of MSY [[Science Division]], eventually rotating through a multitude of roles before settling into her current position as Director of the Black Heart. Marrying and having children at some point, she founded the Kuroi Matriarchy. Her husband is presumed dead, and it is unknown if she remarried.

==Character==
As a youth, she wore glasses despite not needing them and maintained short hair, giving off a bit of an intellectual air. Never particularly attractive, she has never seemed to mind, and never expended to effort to remodel her face, as some others have. She eventually abandoned her glasses and grew out her hair.

Despite her teenage appearance, she gives off the air of an eccentric old lady, likely an intentional mannerism on her part. She can also seem detached or bored on occasion, but like everyone her age, is capable of invoking a staggering amount of willpower. She seems to place a large amount of importance on the welfare of her extended family, holding a place in her heart for even the most distant descendants.

Daughter of a ruined and corrupt politician she spent the time directly after contracting tracking down and exposing her father's associates. Her focus of vengeance soon expanded to criminals of all sorts and perpetrator of the smallest misdemeanour, slipping further into insanity, albeit keeping some semblance of grip in contrast to her later associates.

That was the time she started working together with [[Kure Kirika]] in targeting Mami and Kyouko and making their life hell. Always prodding their territory, poaching, so to speak. Soon after [[Miroko Mikuru]] and [[Hinata Aina]] joined the two, forming the Southern Group and thus escalating the conflict with the [[Mitakihara Four]].

She introduced [[Chitose Yuma]], newly contracted, as a fifth member into the group and mentored her.

Of the four of the original group, Mikuni Oriko was the sanest, which is not as hard as it may seem, and also the mastermind behind the groups formation and operation. In this role she was the James Moriarity befitting of [[Akemi Homura]]'s Sherlock Holmes. The somewhat random incursions grew concerted, as did the killings of magical girls, which only stopped with the still mysterious near wipe-out of the Southern Group at the hands of demons.

As an historical figure she is rather ambiguous – especially considering her power. It is questionable if all of her actions were truly random and unjustified murder of innocent people or of she mayhaps used her power to weed out detrimental futures. Especially the recruitment of Yuma, not really matching the derange psychological make-up of the rest of the group, makes on wonder for Oriko's reasoning.

Her influence was notable of such an degree the [[Incubator]]s regretted Oriko's recruitment.

Oriko wore a white costume.

She was able to transmit her prescient knowledge telepathically, greatly increasing the combat effectiveness of her group. It is assumed she was the most powerful precog of her generation, and incidentally also the last. Even then, when she was at the brink of her own death, she could only perceive darkness when trying to pierce the veil of death.

Kyouko is responsible for most of Ryouko's pre-deployment training and orientation, although usually acting indirectly through her subordinates, [[Patricia von Rohr]] and [[Shirou Asaka]]. Despite this, she is present at the discovery of the [[Supersaturated Grief Cubes]] apparently responsible for the demon attack on Ryouko and [[Simona del Mago]], and at Ryouko's departure from [[Mitakihara City]]. ===Death of her Family===
The daughter of a minister, Kyouko spent a significant portion of her childhood in hunger due to her father's decision to preach outside the doctrine, resulting excommunication from his church, and loss of financial support. Outraged that her father's seemingly reasonable preachings were being completely ignored, Kyouko wished that people would listen. Her wish resulted in a flood of new followers, allowing her family to maintain a stable living for the first time in a long time. It was during this period that she first met Mami, and the two of them decided to work together to fight [[Demon]]s. Notably, while this decision would have been anomalous in the [[Old World]], it was prefectly reasonable in the [[New World]], where they were surrounded by similar magical girl teams.

Unfortunately, Kyouko'a father's discovery of her daughter's new power and form proved too much for him, spending him into a spiral of depression believing that her daughter had sold her soul to the devil. Eventually, this leads him to kill himself, his wife, and Kyouko's younger sister in a murder-suicide. With Mami's support, Kyouko is able to survive the incident, but the loss of her family deeply scars her, causing her to temporarily lose her primary power, and eventually to leave Mami, on the grounds that their ideologies no long match but also, secretly, because she fears being a burden on Mami.

===Reconciliation with Mami===
Over a year later, Kyouko finds herself compelled to intervene when Mami loses control of her rage against [[Mikuni Oriko]] and [[Kure Kirika]] for destroying her home in a spate of vandalism, simultaneously defending Mami and dragging her out of the area to calm down, before providing Mami with the [[Grief Cube]]s necessary to recover. Thought Kyouko leaves soon afterward, the event proves an important moment for the two of them, as Mami, her faith restored in Kyouko, renews attempts to convince Kyouko to team up again. Kyouko, under heavy pressure from attacks by the new [[Southern Group]], finds herself cooperating with Mami more and more frequently, as a matter of survival, in addition to helping Mami to rebuild her home. Finally, Kyouko concedes to the inevitable, moving back in with Mami and even attending school again.

Soon afterward, the two of them rescue an uncontracted [[Akemi Homura]] from an attack by demons, and acquire a third member.

===Sayaka===
The contracting of Sayaka proves to be a defining moment in Kyouko's life. While originally disdainful of Sayaka's naivety and stubbornness, she eventually comes to recognize and admire Sayaka's similarity to her own younger self, driving her to try to protect the girl. Her realization and actions come too late, as Sayaka emotionally self-destructs, exhausting her soul gem exerting excessive power against a group of demons. Only after Sayaka's death does Kyouko come to understand the regret that overcomes her, a regret at lost love. It is heavily implied that Kyouko's experiences lead her to later seek comfort in a long series of shallow, physical relationships.

===MSY===
A member of the [[Mitakihara Four]], Kyouko serves as one of the founders of the [[MSY]] and plays a significant role in its early formation, serving in a variety of positions, including Director of the Logistics and Grief Cubes Division. She also served at least one stint as Chairman and CEO of [[D&E Corporation]], in the alias "Fukuzawa Anko". (Anko is an alternate pronunciation of the characters of her personal name)

While an important member of the organization, Kyouko did not serve as prominent a role as the other members of the Mitakihara Four, serving more quietly as the head of less prominent divisions.

Kyouko is present at the [[Battle of Epsilon Eridani]], witnessing Homura's seemingly miraculous saving of the planet. This causes her to deeply reconsider Homura's statements about the [[Goddess]]. After thinking about it for a year, she gives a fiery speech on the anniversary of the battle, declaring both her belief in the Goddess's existence and the need for a magical girl religion. She is able to acquire prominent followers with stunning speed, and the new Cult of Hope, a church organized with her as the leader, quickly becomes a significant force in MSY affairs. Setting aside the majority of the her other duties, Kyouko devoted herself to her new church full-time.

==Character==
The time she spent living on the streets on her own strongly influenced her personality and behavior, at least outwardly, and among friends she is usually brash, direct, and blunt-mannered. While the passage of time has allowed her to pick up numerous other personas, depending on situation, this still serves as her default set of behavior, though she does tone it down significantly for her duties as leader of the Cult.

Despite her exterior, she possesses as a strong, if specific, set of morals. This does not stop her seducing and bedding a long chain of female lovers, which is likely an aftereffect of her previous love for Sayaka. The topic is still a deep source of pain for her, and Maki's attempts to question her on the matter lead Kyouko to end the relationship.

Kyouko is almost always seen eating or carrying a food item, an aftereffect of her childhood spent without food. She views and treats Yuma as a little sister.

She is notable for her status as the product of both the [[Shizuki Matriarchy|Shizuki]] and [[Kuroi Matriarchy|Kuroi Matriarchies]] (albeit through estranged branches); her tutelage under both [[Tomoe Mami]] and [[Sakura Kyouko]], two of the [[Mitakihara Four]]; and her record-breaking teleportation range of approximately 200 kilometers.

Although she considers herself rational to the point of cynicism, especially with regard to the military and [[Governance]], she is rather less insightful when it comes to her own life and relationships.

==Appearance==
For some reason everyone thinks her hair and eyes are green. I have no objections to that. Her hair is long and wavy (think Hitomi’s hair) but a bit more tentacular (if that makes sense). Remember, the hair is mildly self-mobile (and has a drone hanging off of it).

Her face resembles Hitomi (never said explicitly), but slightly sharper-edged, since instead of wearing that 24/7 ojou-sama look, she has a constant serious look to her. It also appears more childish than Hitomi (think Madoka, for example).

As for her figure, she’s short and flat-chested, but otherwise quite physically fit (with implants, this just sort of automatically happens). Casual clothing wise, she favors the kind of things you saw at the party (white dress, modest shirt top), with maybe pants if she’s not feeling too formal. Costume wise, it’s green, it’s frilly, and it has buttons. It resembles Madoka’s, actually, if you read the description, though it’s not quite as girlish. Dress is a lot less poofy and more practical, among other things. Soul gem is five-pointed star at base of neck. When not transformed, five-pointed star on the appropriate finger (middle finger of left hand, if episode 5 is to be believed). Of course, her weapon is an arbalest mounted on one arm, and she is a teleporter.

(The green of her costume matches the green of the aliens quite well.)

==Personality==
The protagonist Shizuki Ryouko is by all appearances an ordinary girl. Shorter than average, she is constantly worried that her schoolmates don’t take her seriously, and she has consequently learned to conceal whatever girlish tendencies she may have under a cynical outer layer.This is reflective of an overall tendency to worry about her insignificance in the grand scheme of things, and the desire to prove herself. She is frustrated by the seeming banality of life on Earth, and wishes to travel the universe, where she can have meaningful adventures, like her childhood hero Clarisse van Rossum.

More emotional than she admits, she tries to be as rational whenever possible, with mixed success. She is, however, a thoughtful protagonist. When she is engaged, she is unusually focused, to the point of having tunnel vision. When she is unengaged, a part of her is always drifting far away, causing her to pay suboptimal attention to her surroundings. She has little interest in romance, simply because it doesn’t fall into her current set of goals.

In acute crises, she is unlikely to go into hysterics, and indeed may seem level-headed or even cold; this is not indicative of lack of empathy, but simply a core practicality, even in the most extreme cases. In some cases, she can be shockingly blunt-spoken. It is only when her worldview is shaken that she is truly bothered, but she is extremely resilient. These are excellent qualities for a magical girl.

The '''Incubators''' are a race of extraterrestrial aliens who grant one [[Magical Girl#Wish-making|wish]] for girls with magical potential, in exchange turning them into Magical Girls. Their ultimate goal is to combat the universe's entropy levels.

So far only two distinct Incubators have been identified: [[Kyubey]] and the unnamed Incubator from {{Ch|2}}.

==History==
As prepubescent human girls have proven to be the best source of energy available, the histories of Incubators and humans have been intricately linked. It has been implied that human innovation and technology have advanced so far and so fast only because they have been spurred on by the wishes made by girls throughout the ages.

The earliest suspected interaction between girl and Incubator is the discovery of fire.

==Methodology==
The details of their technology and its relation with magic are not wholly understood (even to the Incubators themselves, when regarding magic). However, it is known that they harness the emotional energy generated by prepubescent human girls when they are converted into Magical Girls, and that they grant one wish or one "miracle" in return. They are also tasked with consuming Grief Cube, preferably saturated ones, in order to make sure [[demons]] do not spawn.

Incubators, before the formation of [[MSY]], approached girls with potential on their own to pitch their offers, relying on two main sales points: the ability to grant one "miracle" of any kind (within reach of the girl's own "karmic destiny") and what girls as a whole would consider to be a "cute" appearance. They are responsible for explaining all aspects of a Magical Girl, including powers, conditions, and responsibilities, and ''especially'' including the fact that a Magical Girl's soul is transferred to her Soul Gem. Other than this, however, an Incubator is free to pursue a contract in any way they please, such as but not limited to gaining a position of trust by being sympathetic and urging on on the teenage impulses of potential contractees. There have been hints that Incubators deliberately ''engineered'' a situation that would force someone to become a Magical Girl, in the past. Most of these methods have, by this point, are now the responsibilities of the MSY and have been toned down.

Traditionally the Incubators had taught, guided, and coordinated Magical Girls when there were no tutors to do so, attempting to prolong each girl's lives as long as possible. They are ordinarily neutral in conflicts between Magical Girls, as their objective is to efficiently retrieve as much emotional energy as possible with concern for little else (though a notable exception would be [[Mikuni Oriko]] and her group, considering their efficiency in killing ''other'' Magical Girls). Since the advent of the MSY the Incubators often work in concert with them, as their presence have been shown to have extremely positive effects on MG longevity as well as a positive correlation with recruitment numbers.

==Physiology and Abilities==
Incubators resemble white cats with long, floppy ears, each encircled by a golden ring. They have a teardrop-shaped mark on their back that opens to allow for consumption of Grief Cubes. The texture of their bodies and the consistency of their biological makeup are, presumably, similar to cotton plushies<ref>[http://www.crunchyroll.com/puella-magi-madoka-magica/episode-8-i-was-stupid-so-stupid-591749 Episode 8]
</ref>. Though they may eat regular food with the mouth on their face, it is unknown if it has any nutritious or otherwise significant value to them.

Only magical girls and potential magical girls can see or detect Incubators presence in any way, though whether this is the Incubators' natural feature or if they chose to largely conceal their presence is not clear. Incubators only communicates telepathically, and can act as relays for girls who are not Magical Girls yet (though they have never described if this ability works by "forwarding" a mental thought or simply mimicking and resending it).

Incubators are by nature emotionless, and views any hint of such on their kind as a mental disorder. Though Incubators told very little to humans about themselves, there are some suggestions that Incubator society operates on [[Governance]]'s "Emergency Mode Level Four": the "mechanization of all human interaction"<ref>{{Ch|8}}</ref>.

==Reception by Society==
In general, younger Magical Girls view and treat Incubators as the traditional, cute and cuddly ''Mahou Shoujo'' anime mascots. [[Karina Schei]] and [[Shen Xiao Long]] even teases Kyubey in jest, on one occasion<ref>{{Ch|6}}</ref>. Older Magical Girls appear to be more aware of the Incubators' ability to manipulate.

Reception from the general population is less clear. It is known that the radically conservative sectors equates them to traditional demons, reminiscent of the saying "a deal with the devil". Youths appear more likely to respond to them with curiosity, if the sales of Incubator plushies are anything to go by. Parents most likely categorizes them similarly to MGs in general; grateful in public, yet spiteful where their girl is concerned. Scientists may or may not be frustrated by the lack of information on Incubators themselves and their technologies, or ecstatic in whatever furthering of sciences that they do offer. Military personnel and [[Governance]] are, presumably, gratified for the providence of Magical Girls.

[[Kyubey]] (キュゥべえ, ''Kyuubee'') is the Incubator that [http://wiki.puella-magi.net/Kyubey featured prominently in the original series], being responsible for [[Mitakihara City]]. Kyouko is responsible for most of Ryouko's pre-deployment training and orientation, although usually acting indirectly through her subordinates, [[Patricia von Rohr]] and [[Shirou Asaka]]. Despite this, she is present at the discovery of the [[Supersaturated Grief Cubes]] apparently responsible for the demon attack on Ryouko and [[Simona del Mago]], and at Ryouko's departure from [[Mitakihara City]]. Kyouko is also present at numerous meetings with [[Tomoe Mami]] and [[Chitose Yuma]] to discuss the numerous mysterious circumstances surrounding Ryouko's contracting, as well the [[Grief Cube Discrepancy]]. Several significant flashbacks are seen from her viewpoint.

Kyouko is also involved in a significant subplot regarding her year-long relationship with [[Kishida Maki]]. Maki's realization that her resemblance to the dead [[Miki Sayaka]] served as a significant reason for Kyouko forming the relationship causes her to confront Kyouko, asking that she tell her the truth about their relationship. After a stormy argument, Kyouko tells Maki to leave, claiming that their relationship was nothing more than a fling.

==Background==
===Death of her Family===
The daughter of a minister, Kyouko spent a significant portion of her childhood in hunger due to her father's decision to preach outside the doctrine, resulting excommunication from his church, and loss of financial support. Outraged that her father's seemingly reasonable preachings were being completely ignored, Kyouko wished that people would listen. Her wish resulted in a flood of new followers, allowing her family to maintain a stable living for the first time in a long time. It was during this period that she first met Mami, and the two of them decided to work together to fight [[Demon]]s. Notably, while this decision would have been anomalous in the [[Old World]], it was prefectly reasonable in the [[New World]], where they were surrounded by similar magical girl teams.

Unfortunately, Kyouko'a father's discovery of her daughter's new power and form proved too much for him, spending him into a spiral of depression believing that her daughter had sold her soul to the devil. Eventually, this leads him to kill himself, his wife, and Kyouko's younger sister in a murder-suicide. With Mami's support, Kyouko is able to survive the incident, but the loss of her family deeply scars her, causing her to temporarily lose her primary power, and eventually to leave Mami, on the grounds that their ideologies no long match but also, secretly, because she fears being a burden on Mami.

===Reconciliation with Mami===
Over a year later, Kyouko finds herself compelled to intervene when Mami loses control of her rage against [[Mikuni Oriko]] and [[Kure Kirika]] for destroying her home in a spate of vandalism, simultaneously defending Mami and dragging her out of the area to calm down, before providing Mami with the [[Grief Cube]]s necessary to recover. Thought Kyouko leaves soon afterward, the event proves an important moment for the two of them, as Mami, her faith restored in Kyouko, renews attempts to convince Kyouko to team up again. Kyouko, under heavy pressure from attacks by the new [[Southern Group]], finds herself cooperating with Mami more and more frequently, as a matter of survival, in addition to helping Mami to rebuild her home. Finally, Kyouko concedes to the inevitable, moving back in with Mami and even attending school again.

Soon afterward, the two of them rescue an uncontracted [[Akemi Homura]] from an attack by demons, and acquire a third member.

===Sayaka===
The contracting of Sayaka proves to be a defining moment in Kyouko's life. While originally disdainful of Sayaka's naivety and stubbornness, she eventually comes to recognize and admire Sayaka's similarity to her own younger self, driving her to try to protect the girl. Her realization and actions come too late, as Sayaka emotionally self-destructs, exhausting her soul gem exerting excessive power against a group of demons. Only after Sayaka's death does Kyouko come to understand the regret that overcomes her, a regret at lost love. It is heavily implied that Kyouko's experiences lead her to later seek comfort in a long series of shallow, physical relationships.

===MSY===
A member of the [[Mitakihara Four]], Kyouko serves as one of the founders of the [[MSY]] and plays a significant role in its early formation, serving in a variety of positions, including Director of the Logistics and Grief Cubes Division. She also served at least one stint as Chairman and CEO of [[D&E Corporation]], in the alias "Fukuzawa Anko". (Anko is an alternate pronunciation of the characters of her personal name)

While an important member of the organization, Kyouko did not serve as prominent a role as the other members of the Mitakihara Four, serving more quietly as the head of less prominent divisions.

===Cult of Hope===
Kyouko is present at the [[Battle of Epsilon Eridani]], witnessing Homura's seemingly miraculous saving of the planet. This causes her to deeply reconsider Homura's statements about the [[Goddess]]. After thinking about it for a year, she gives a fiery speech on the anniversary of the battle, declaring both her belief in the Goddess's existence and the need for a magical girl religion. She is able to acquire prominent followers with stunning speed, and the new Cult of Hope, a church organized with her as the leader, quickly becomes a significant force in MSY affairs. Setting aside the majority of the her other duties, Kyouko devoted herself to her new church full-time.

==Character==
The time she spent living on the streets on her own strongly influenced her personality and behavior, at least outwardly, and among friends she is usually brash, direct, and blunt-mannered. While the passage of time has allowed her to pick up numerous other personas, depending on situation, this still serves as her default set of behavior, though she does tone it down significantly for her duties as leader of the Cult.

Despite her exterior, she possesses as a strong, if specific, set of morals. This does not stop her seducing and bedding a long chain of female lovers, which is likely an aftereffect of her previous love for Sayaka. The topic is still a deep source of pain for her, and Maki's attempts to question her on the matter lead Kyouko to end the relationship.

Kyouko is almost always seen eating or carrying a food item, an aftereffect of her childhood spent without food. She views and treats Yuma as a little sister.
