A meek and unassertive girl, she has the interesting quality of having a build and height very similar to [[Shizuki Ryouko|Ryouko]], easing [[Shizuki Ryouko|Ryouko]]’s insecurities about the issue. Contracted in the same week as [[Shizuki Ryouko|Ryouko]], they land in the same training cohort on New Athens, (as opposed to the other possibility: Mars) and appear to have become bosom friends (and, in Asami's case, something more) over the course of training simulations. She is currently part of the Magi Cæli.

Asami dreamt of being a xenobiologist and shares several personality traits (lack of satisfaction on earth, ambitious dreams, and urge to visit the colonies) with [[Shizuki Ryouko|Ryouko]], but instead spent her wish repairing discord between her parents, for the sake of her younger brother (she also has a much older brother). Asami has gravity-related powers, can sense gravitational shifts, and wears her hair in an unbraided ponytail. It may be that low gravity environments intoxicate her. Who knows?

Although Asami at first expressed a disinterest in romance, she began (awkwardly) dropping hints about her growing affections to [[Shizuki Ryouko|Ryouko]] during their training, and finally confessed her love at an Acheron hot spring.

==Story==

She participated in the [[Kepler-37 Offensive]], defending Pollux shipyard on the planet Apollo from Cephalopod forces. As a result, her body was lost and her Soul Gem was recovered by a MedEvac drone. When her body was recovered, she heard the news that [[Shizuki Ryouko|Ryouko]] was speculated dead, and as a result started to fall into despair, which prompted her body to be ejected by the MedEvac drone. Asami's Soul Gem was brought back to Earth, where it was integrated into her backup clone, whose growth was accelerated by the inclusion of body parts recovered from her original body.

She is surprised by Ryouko's attendance to her resurrection and desperately holds onto her, as it becomes increasingly clear that she might not have any home to return to. She is delighted however when Ryouko agrees to be her girlfriend and when Ryouko brings the two to visit the Ribbon, the Goddess gives her direct relationship advice.

Asami would later be an integral part of [[X-25]] and the [[Project Armstrong|Pulsar Mission]]

Following Ryouko stranding at the Pulsar site and with her considered MIA or outright dead, Asami is devastated. [[Clarisse van Rossum]] tries to get her to do something other than grieving and convinces her to at least try talking to [[Simona]]. Though Simona's declaration of Ryouko's survival initially seems nonsensical, Van Rossum suggests confirming her delusions at [[the Ribbon]], with Simona stressing the need go past any jealousy and focus on saving Ryouko.

It is with her permission Kuma's request for installation of the next generation [[TacComp]] in his daughter [[Shizuki Ryouko]] was granted.

She is part of the Valentin family, a minor matriarchy with some [[Magical Girl]]s, but no real success in climbing up in the [[MSY]], to a degree her branch wasn't aware of the MSY's existence. After graduating as a chemist she worked in various labs, without earning much distinction. Disaffected with her work, lacking a social circle she was happy with she started seeing a psychiatrist.

After the war with the [[Cephalopod]]s she claimed to have had an religious experience, prompting her to switch scientific fields, become a physicist and earn a DSc. No more apathetic to her work she distinguished herself by participating in the development of starship force fields, which was rewarded with a Nobel Prize for the principal researches (not including her).

Following that she started researching entropy, the heat death of the universe and magical girls and was the first outsider to realize the implications of the entropy gap in conjunction with magical girls. This in turn put her in the focus of the MSY's Science Division, allowing for her to mingle with their professors and be interviewed and accepted for the position of Managing Director in the Prometheus Research Institute.

She seems to be both a prestigious personality as well as very skilled manager, earning her the Oppenheimer Award.

A diligent and skilled worker, very focused on the task at hand.

Interestingly enough, some irregularities appeared in connection to Joanne Valentin.

* [[Ryouko]] was sure to recognize her as the person she saw when she was first attacked by demons. There might be some (very loose) connection to the [[Grief Cube Discrepancy]] if one takes the supersaturated nature of the grief cubes found close by into consideration.
* She was present just before [[Tomoe Mami]] was about to watch a movie in disguise.
* Based on a gut feeling and the personality of Joanne Valentin, [[Yuma]] doesn't believe the claimed "religious experience" as the reason for change and suspects a [[Reformat]].

Later ({{ch|58}}) it would be shown that Joanne Valentin was actually [[Akemi Homura]], the original Joanne Valentin having a life in the colonies (with consent).<ref name="valentin-note-1" />

==Personality==
Kuroi Nakase tends toward the quiet and reserved, but, as an administrator inside the Prometheus Research Institute, is rumored to be unforgiving as a boss, at least towards incompetence. When Kuroi Nakase is explaining something, she has a tendency to lapse into long periods of overly-detailed textbook-like verbiage, an aftereffect of her demand for precision in her work.

She seems to be a loving parent, but disapproves strongly of Ryouko making a contract, believing she cannot handle herself, and has a dislike of the [[MSY]] and [[Armed Forces|military]]. Her marriage with [[Shizuki Kuma]] is on the brink of collapse; they nearly divorced before deciding to give it another try after receiving a child license, and Kuroi Abe says they're "at the point where they both find the silliest reasons to get angry at each other". However, the couple hid it successfully from their teenage daughter, who suspected nothing. (In the end, they divorced soon after Ryouko contracted, and was forced to tell Ryouko since she would not be staying at her old room.)

In childhood, Kuroi Nakase had been bright, childish, and bubbly, until her experience with her friend [[Kavita]].

==History==
Kuroi Nakase is a former magical girl, something which must be extremely rare. Her experience with her contract was not particularly positive, since she was unfortunate enough to have the team member she wished to save lose her body in front of her, and later, blame her for the incident. Her relationship with her teammates were also strained; though they reassured her, claiming it was not her fault, they appeared not to take her seriously - such as ignoring her claims about [[Kuroi Nana|her sister]] suspecting and doing something - and Nakase believes they thought of her as useless. Shortly after initially contracting, her contract was canceled by her sister’s wish after her body was destroyed by a horde of [[demons]].

These experiences fed strongly into her later beliefs and actions, particularly on her work.

Following the raid on [[X-25]], [[Sacnite Tafani]] was put in the care of Nakase and her sister, with her eventually being fully adopted into the Kuroi family as Nakase's daughter.

==Work==
As a biologist with a neuroscience and nanotechnology background, Kuroi Nakase contributed significantly to the development of the "[[Mahou Shoujo Youkai#R&D|blank slate]]" clones the MSY currently uses to revive magical girls who have lost a significant portion of their body in combat. Now partially retired, she divides her time between attending to family during the day and research activities during the night, including the regular decanting of revived body loss cases.

It was at the Prometheus Research Institute that she met [[Shizuki Kuma]], a while after starting the secret blank slate project.

==Appearance==
Her features are softer than her daughter’s, lacking the aristocratic cast to the face characteristic of the [[Shizuki Matriarchy]]. It is practically a tautology to say she looks younger than her age, but she looks even younger than her physical age, and is somewhat short of stature and flat chested (though not as much as her daughter). She lacks her daughter’s perpetual serious look, but will easily gain something similar if the situation calls for it. She typically wears her hair down, like her daughter, but in the workplace the hair will be found folded back into a working ponytail. Some may speculate that her hair is blue. Ryouko notes that Kuroi Nana's "gentle and sharply precise" voice reminds her of her mother, except Nana's voice is lower.

During her short period of time as a Magical Girl, Kuroi Nakase had a costume similar in appearance to her daughter's, except her theme color was blue.

'''Akemi Homura''' (暁美ほむら ''Akemi Homura'') is missing. Born again as a magical girl, she carried distant memories of past lives and worshipped [[Madoka|a girl lost long ago]]. She soldiered on for centuries, becoming one of the founders of the [[MSY]] and leading parts of the organization, before disappearing of her own accord immediately after the [[Battle of Epsilon Eridani]].

==Story==
Homura is first introduced in-story in the context of the [[Akemi (movie)]], where she stars as the main character. Most information about her life in the [[New World]] comes from the movie's dramatized account and the recollections of other members of the [[Mitakihara Four]].

While she is presumed dead afterward by both [[Governance]] and the [[MSY]], many senior officials instead believe she is alive and in hiding, and the [[Black Heart]] maintains an effort to find her again, led by [[Kuroi Nana]], which has uncovered evidence that she survived at least a couple of years after her disappearance.

It turns out that Homura negotiated a binding‐preference‐alteration‐agreement with the [[Ceph]] (specifically the Tentacle <code>Consensus/Ahimsa-extending</code>), bringing "a written document claiming <code>Consensus/Thinker‐preserving</code> was compromised, and that their violence was founded on false premises". Her star name is <code>Divine‐seeking</code>. The document "gave detailed instructions on where and when to wait for <nowiki>[</nowiki>[[Shizuki Ryouko]]<nowiki>]</nowiki>, and requested technology necessary to produce [her]"; the latter presumably refers to the pre-natal surgery Homura performed on Ryouko, adding an incomplete (Ceph-)communications and preference-specification organ (later completed by the Ceph).

[[MG]] was also in the negotiations. This led [[Chitose Yuma]] to the asteroid in deep space where the negotiations presumably occured. Yuma had previously seen a letter that implied [[Joanne Valentin]]'s role was replaced by Homura (with consent; the original Valentin now lives in the [[Colonies]]). Additionally, Joanne Valentin was also at (( some colony )), where [[Sakura Kyouko]] found coordinates that led to the very same location in deep space, causing Kyouko and Yuma to meet up. (( See the [[Joanne Valentin]] article for more details )). Yuma in turn told Ryouko that [[Joanne Valentin]] is Homura, which allows Ryouko to later state that Homura installed the Version 2 [[TacComp]] [[Clarisse]] on Ryouko.

[[Tomoe Mami]] would also receive evidence of Homura's survival; for instance, Homura was the only one who could've undone Mami's self-reformat (given that [[Sakura Kyouko]] and [[Chitose Yuma]] didn't). Additionally, Mami redirected a projectile heading for Earth with much less grief than usual; this amplification of power is attributed to Homura. It has been suggested that Homura had a hand in the team selection of [[X-25]].

Homura is the only one with intact memories of the [[Old World]], and the only one who knows the whole story behind the [[Goddess]]. While she often hints or discusses her past and the Goddess with others, she refuses to ever use the Goddess's name, except once, at the very beginning. These conversations form the basis of the beliefs of the [[Cult of Hope]], formed after her presumed death.

==Background==
===Before [[Sayaka]]'s Death===
From Mami's commentary on the ''Akemi'' Movie, it seems Homura was left as an orphan at a Catholic convent from a young age, possible even from birth, and probably has no memories of her parents. At some point in her childhood, she developed a serious heart condition, seriously enough to require extensive hospitalization and surgery. While she survived the experience, she was severely weakened physically, and lacked social skills from years spent away from her peers in the hospital. She abandoned the religion imposed upon her by the convent, opting instead to live alone and attend a regular middle school.

Homura's despondence on her inability to socialize in her new school leaves her vulnerable to demon attack, but she is rescued by [[Tomoe Mami]] and [[Sakura Kyouko]]. Upon discovering she has [[Potential]], she makes a wish to protect the universe, one that seems unusually audacious given her background. The ''Akemi'' Movie attributes to a vision from the Goddess.

Later on, their group acquires Sayaka as an additional member, but Sayaka's inability to deal with the consequences of her contract and losing her [[Kyousuke Kamijou|crush]] to [[Shizuki Hitomi]] causes her to [[Soul Gem Exhaustion|exhaust her soul gem]].

===After Sayaka's Death===
Immediately after Sayaka's death, the Akemi Homura from the old world arrives, her memories integrating into the Homura of the new world. While the superior weight and duration of the memories from the old world ensure that the personality from the old world becomes dominant, the new Homura is not erased, and aspects of her personality can still be seen in Homura's later behavior.

Homura has initial difficulty reconciling the disparate memories and dealing with her new situations, but overcomes it rather smoothly. In one of Mami's flashbacks, she visits the Mitakihara docks on what is implied to be [[Walpurgisnacht]], and is visited by [[Clarisse van Rossum]].

===MSY===
Homura becomes the driving personality for the formation of nascent MSY, eventually attaining the charisma and support necessary to cement a role as the MSY's ''de facto'' leader, which is formalized by her consistent reelection as [[First Executive]] post-[[MSY Charter of 2059]], a post she never cedes. She leads the MSY all up to the [[Battle of Epsilon Eridani]], becoming somewhat notorious for her belief in a Goddess of magical girls and occasional comments regarding the old world. Publicly, this is written off as an eccentricity, but privately the MSY leadership never stops trying to get her into the office of a [[MHD]] psychiatrist.

During the battle of Epsilon Eridani, she exhausts her soul gem for the first time, but survives, and is heard speaking to her Goddess. She then single-handedly leads the MSY and humans back to victory, displaying an unheard of and novel level of power, including the deflection of a [[Cephalopods|Cephalopod]] particle cannon superweapon. Her seemingly miraculous displays of ability lead Kyouko to form the Cult of Hope a year later.

Despite her great feats, and the dire need the MSY has for a leader after being revealed to the rest of humanity, Homura appears to be severely destabilized by the event, deliberately experimenting with exhausting her own soul gem and seeming to lose her willpower. Finally, she announces to [[Kyouko]] and [[Mami]] that she is leaving the MSY, escapes their attempt to [[Befriending|befriend]] her and disappears entirely.

The investigations of [[Kuroi Nana]] and [[MSY Internal Affairs]] later reveal that Homura hid in the colony worlds for a number of years, occasionally contributing secretly to battles against the aliens, but they lose her trail after that.

Homura's influence on the organization is such that, after her disappearance in 2440, the first executive post is permanently vacated, leaving her as the honorary first executive, even in death.

==Character==
Traumatized by her past experiences, and still pining for her Goddess, Homura rarely expresses significant emotion, and often comes across as cold and calculating. As leader of the MSY, she had a tendency to micromanage, and was very deeply involved in the affairs of [[Finance Division]] and [[Science Division]].

She lacks the moral outrage Kyouko and Mami often had for some of the MSY's more questionable acts, and it is likely she was a strong supporter of the Black Heart, supporting [[Chitose Yuma]] against the others. Despite that, Homura lacks Yuma's absolute utilitarianism, and occasionally opposed actions on the grounds that her Goddess would not approve. While by no means evangelistic about her beliefs regarding her Goddess and the magical girl system, her quiet certainty in what she said led her to obtain a reputation as eccentric, and possibly subtly insane.

Despite these shortcomings, Homura was eventually able to cultivate a politician's command of emotional expression, gaining the ability to be exceptionally charismatic when necessary. In private, especially in the presence of the Mitakihara Four, she was considerably softer-edged, and could occasionally even seem like a normal girl.

A meek and unassertive girl, she has the interesting quality of having a build and height very similar to [[Shizuki Ryouko|Ryouko]], easing [[Shizuki Ryouko|Ryouko]]’s insecurities about the issue. Contracted in the same week as [[Shizuki Ryouko|Ryouko]], they land in the same training cohort on New Athens, (as opposed to the other possibility: Mars) and appear to have become bosom friends (and, in Asami's case, something more) over the course of training simulations. She is currently part of the Magi Cæli.

Asami dreamt of being a xenobiologist and shares several personality traits (lack of satisfaction on earth, ambitious dreams, and urge to visit the colonies) with [[Shizuki Ryouko|Ryouko]], but instead spent her wish repairing discord between her parents, for the sake of her younger brother (she also has a much older brother). Asami has gravity-related powers, can sense gravitational shifts, and wears her hair in an unbraided ponytail. It may be that low gravity environments intoxicate her. Who knows?

Although Asami at first expressed a disinterest in romance, she began (awkwardly) dropping hints about her growing affections to [[Shizuki Ryouko|Ryouko]] during their training, and finally confessed her love at an Acheron hot spring.

==Story==

She participated in the [[Kepler-37 Offensive]], defending Pollux shipyard on the planet Apollo from Cephalopod forces. As a result, her body was lost and her Soul Gem was recovered by a MedEvac drone. When her body was recovered, she heard the news that [[Shizuki Ryouko|Ryouko]] was speculated dead, and as a result started to fall into despair, which prompted her body to be ejected by the MedEvac drone. Asami's Soul Gem was brought back to Earth, where it was integrated into her backup clone, whose growth was accelerated by the inclusion of body parts recovered from her original body.

She is surprised by Ryouko's attendance to her resurrection and desperately holds onto her, as it becomes increasingly clear that she might not have any home to return to. She is delighted however when Ryouko agrees to be her girlfriend and when Ryouko brings the two to visit the Ribbon, the Goddess gives her direct relationship advice.

Asami would later be an integral part of [[X-25]] and the [[Project Armstrong|Pulsar Mission]]

Following Ryouko stranding at the Pulsar site and with her considered MIA or outright dead, Asami is devastated. [[Clarisse Van Rossum]] tries to get her to do something other than grieving and convinces her to at least try talking to [[Simona]]. Though Simona's declaration of Ryouko's survival initially seems nonsensical, Van Rossum suggests confirming her delusions at [[the Ribbon]], with Simona stressing the need go past any jealousy and focus on saving Ryouko.

'''Clarisse van Rossum''' is one of the oldest, if not ''the'' oldest [[Magical Girl]] alive. Being born sometime in the 19th century (in the Netherlands, if her name is any indication) by now she's one of the few, if not the only, person past 500 years of age. She usually appears to be around 30 years old, though. Her hair is wavy and her face is freckled.

Van Rossum's chosen vocation is historian, with her wish implied to be in the line of "witness historical events". In this vein the extent of her power waxes and wanes with (physical and temporal) proximity to historical events. Furthermore it gives her a feeling as to where something significant will happen, or at least where she ought to be to witness it. As many other ancients she has spent time to expand her magical repertoire as well, giving her the ability of, among others, short range teleportation and telekinesis. These are coupled with the aforementioned proximity to events, though, making some only available on the cusp of these historical happenstances.

Furthermore van Rossum's power includes the ability to record powers and memories of willing or dead persons in a book, which she can call upon in certain cases and places, making her on those occasions a metaphorical Swiss Army Knife of Terror if she so desires.

Van Rossum is a prominent member of the [[Cult of Hope]]. Not only does she serve on the Theological Council, but she has personally received multiple visions from [[Kaname Madoka|the Goddess]].

In [[To the Stars]], she has thus far appeared only in flashbacks, disappearing of her own accord immediately after the [[Battle of Epsilon Eridani]].

==Story==
Homura is first introduced in-story in the context of the [[Akemi (movie)]], where she stars as the main character. Most information about her life in the [[New World]] comes from the movie's dramatized account and the recollections of other members of the [[Mitakihara Four]].

While she is presumed dead afterward by both [[Governance]] and the [[MSY]], many senior officials instead believe she is alive and in hiding, and the [[Black Heart]] maintains an effort to find her again, led by [[Kuroi Nana]], which has uncovered evidence that she survived at least a couple of years after her disappearance.

It turns out that Homura negotiated a binding‐preference‐alteration‐agreement with the [[Ceph]] (specifically the Tentacle <code>Consensus/Ahimsa-extending</code>), bringing "a written document claiming <code>Consensus/Thinker‐preserving</code> was compromised, and that their violence was founded on false premises". Her star name is <code>Divine‐seeking</code>. The document "gave detailed instructions on where and when to wait for <nowiki>[</nowiki>[[Shizuki Ryouko]]<nowiki>]</nowiki>, and requested technology necessary to produce [her]"; the latter presumably refers to the pre-natal surgery Homura performed on Ryouko, adding an incomplete (Ceph-)communications and preference-specification organ (later completed by the Ceph).

[[MG]] was also in the negotiations. This led [[Chitose Yuma]] to the asteroid in deep space where the negotiations presumably occured. Yuma had previously seen a letter that implied [[Joanne Valentin]]'s role was replaced by Homura (with consent; the original Valentin now lives in the [[Colonies]]). Additionally, Joanne Valentin was also at (( some colony )), where [[Sakura Kyouko]] found coordinates that led to the very same location in deep space, causing Kyouko and Yuma to meet up. (( See the [[Joanne Valentin]] article for more details )). Yuma in turn told Ryouko that [[Joanne Valentin]] is Homura, which allows Ryouko to later state that Homura installed the Version 2 [[TacComp]] [[Clarisse]] on Ryouko.

[[Tomoe Mami]] would also receive evidence of Homura's survival; for instance, Homura was the only one who could've undone Mami's self-reformat (given that [[Sakura Kyouko]] and [[Chitose Yuma]] didn't). Additionally, Mami redirected a projectile heading for Earth with much less grief than usual; this amplification of power is attributed to Homura. It has been suggested that Homura had a hand in the team selection of [[X-25]].

Homura is the only one with intact memories of the [[Old World]], and the only one who knows the whole story behind the [[Goddess]]. While she often hints or discusses her past and the Goddess with others, she refuses to ever use the Goddess's name, except once, at the very beginning. These conversations form the basis of the beliefs of the [[Cult of Hope]], formed after her presumed death.

===Before [[Sayaka]]'s Death===
From Mami's commentary on the ''Akemi'' Movie, it seems Homura was left as an orphan at a Catholic convent from a young age, possible even from birth, and probably has no memories of her parents. At some point in her childhood, she developed a serious heart condition, seriously enough to require extensive hospitalization and surgery. While she survived the experience, she was severely weakened physically, and lacked social skills from years spent away from her peers in the hospital. She abandoned the religion imposed upon her by the convent, opting instead to live alone and attend a regular middle school.

Homura's despondence on her inability to socialize in her new school leaves her vulnerable to demon attack, but she is rescued by [[Tomoe Mami]] and [[Sakura Kyouko]]. Upon discovering she has [[Potential]], she makes a wish to protect the universe, one that seems unusually audacious given her background. The ''Akemi'' Movie attributes to a vision from the Goddess.

Later on, their group acquires Sayaka as an additional member, but Sayaka's inability to deal with the consequences of her contract and losing her [[Kyousuke Kamijou|crush]] to [[Shizuki Hitomi]] causes her to [[Soul Gem Exhaustion|exhaust her soul gem]].

===After Sayaka's Death===
Immediately after Sayaka's death, the Akemi Homura from the old world arrives, her memories integrating into the Homura of the new world. While the superior weight and duration of the memories from the old world ensure that the personality from the old world becomes dominant, the new Homura is not erased, and aspects of her personality can still be seen in Homura's later behavior.

Homura has initial difficulty reconciling the disparate memories and dealing with her new situations, but overcomes it rather smoothly. In one of Mami's flashbacks, she visits the Mitakihara docks on what is implied to be [[Walpurgisnacht]], and is visited by [[Clarisse van Rossum]].

===MSY===
Homura becomes the driving personality for the formation of nascent MSY, eventually attaining the charisma and support necessary to cement a role as the MSY's ''de facto'' leader, which is formalized by her consistent reelection as [[First Executive]] post-[[MSY Charter of 2059]], a post she never cedes. She leads the MSY all up to the [[Battle of Epsilon Eridani]], becoming somewhat notorious for her belief in a Goddess of magical girls and occasional comments regarding the old world. Publicly, this is written off as an eccentricity, but privately the MSY leadership never stops trying to get her into the office of a [[MHD]] psychiatrist.

During the battle of Epsilon Eridani, she exhausts her soul gem for the first time, but survives, and is heard speaking to her Goddess. She then single-handedly leads the MSY and humans back to victory, displaying an unheard of and novel level of power, including the deflection of a [[Cephalopods|Cephalopod]] particle cannon superweapon. Her seemingly miraculous displays of ability lead Kyouko to form the Cult of Hope a year later.

Despite her great feats, and the dire need the MSY has for a leader after being revealed to the rest of humanity, Homura appears to be severely destabilized by the event, deliberately experimenting with exhausting her own soul gem and seeming to lose her willpower. Finally, she announces to [[Kyouko]] and [[Mami]] that she is leaving the MSY, escapes their attempt to [[Befriending|befriend]] her and disappears entirely.

The investigations of [[Kuroi Nana]] and [[MSY Internal Affairs]] later reveal that Homura hid in the colony worlds for a number of years, occasionally contributing secretly to battles against the aliens, but they lose her trail after that.

Homura's influence on the organization is such that, after her disappearance in 2440, the first executive post is permanently vacated, leaving her as the honorary first executive, even in death.

==Character==
Traumatized by her past experiences, and still pining for her Goddess, Homura rarely expresses significant emotion, and often comes across as cold and calculating. As leader of the MSY, she had a tendency to micromanage, and was very deeply involved in the affairs of [[Finance Division]] and [[Science Division]].

She lacks the moral outrage Kyouko and Mami often had for some of the MSY's more questionable acts, and it is likely she was a strong supporter of the Black Heart, supporting [[Chitose Yuma]] against the others. Despite that, Homura lacks Yuma's absolute utilitarianism, and occasionally opposed actions on the grounds that her Goddess would not approve. While by no means evangelistic about her beliefs regarding her Goddess and the magical girl system, her quiet certainty in what she said led her to obtain a reputation as eccentric, and possibly subtly insane.

Despite these shortcomings, Homura was eventually able to cultivate a politician's command of emotional expression, gaining the ability to be exceptionally charismatic when necessary. In private, especially in the presence of the Mitakihara Four, she was considerably softer-edged, and could occasionally even seem like a normal girl.

===Southern Group===
The child of two abusive parents, Yuma and her parents are attacked by demons when she is nine, an encounter that kills both her parents. Yuma herself is saved by [[Mikuni Oriko]] and her Southern Group, who takes her in.

Yuma lives for around two years as part of the Southern Group, sticking out like a sore thumb among a group otherwise composed of the insane, psychopathic, or merely murderous. While Oriko apparently makes an effort to protect her from the influence of the rest of the group, it is not entirely effective. It is unclear how involved Yuma was involved in the atrocities committed by the group, or how much she even knew about these atrocities.

There is evidence that Yuma develops a significant attachment to Oriko, and she speaks of her with the "nee-chan" honorific even centuries later.

Yuma is the only survivor of the Southern Group's apparent demise to a group of demons. While the official account stipulates that Yuma survived on her own, and was subsequently forced to throw herself on the mercy of the [[Mitakihara Four]] (then Three), Kyouko's flashback shows that the Mitakihara Three actively saved her after the death of her former teammates, incapacitating Yuma when it became clear that she was mired in the throes of despair-induced insanity. Afterward, Yuma became the fourth member of the [[Mitakihara Four]].

Later on, it is revealed in Chapter 44 that it was Yuma herself who orchestrated the near-eradication of the Southern Group, by use of doctored grief cubes to spawn Demons that would overwhelm the Southern Group, as well as strategically disseminating information on Oriko's visions that turned its members against each other.

===MSY===
Despite the others' attempts to give her a normal childhood, it becomes clear that Yuma's time as part of the Southern Group had a profound effect on her personality. Displaying an early affinity for the bribery and other tasks that were necessary to keep the [[MSY]] secret from the government, she becomes director of MSY [[Governmental Affairs]], gaining a reputation for a Utilitarian ends-justify-the-means morality that often puts her at odds with Kyouko and Mami.

The child of two abusive parents, Yuma and her parents are attacked by demons when she is nine, an encounter that kills both her parents. Yuma herself is saved by [[Mikuni Oriko]] and her Southern Group, who takes her in.

Yuma lives for around two years as part of the Southern Group, sticking out like a sore thumb among a group otherwise composed of the insane, psychopathic, or merely murderous. While Oriko apparently makes an effort to protect her from the influence of the rest of the group, it is not entirely effective. It is unclear how involved Yuma was involved in the atrocities committed by the group, or how much she even knew about these atrocities.

There is evidence that Yuma develops a significant attachment to Oriko, and she speaks of her with the "nee-chan" honorific even centuries later.

Yuma is the only survivor of the Southern Group's apparent demise to a group of demons. While the official account stipulates that Yuma survived on her own, and was subsequently forced to throw herself on the mercy of the [[Mitakihara Four]] (then Three), Kyouko's flashback shows that the Mitakihara Three actively saved her after the death of her former teammates, incapacitating Yuma when it became clear that she was mired in the throes of despair-induced insanity. Afterward, Yuma became the fourth member of the [[Mitakihara Four]].

Later on, it is revealed in Chapter 44 that it was Yuma herself who orchestrated the near-eradication of the Southern Group, by use of doctored grief cubes to spawn Demons that would overwhelm the Southern Group, as well as strategically disseminating information on Oriko's visions that turned its members against each other.

She survived solo demon hunts for over a year, taught herself how to form muskets, and mentored Kyouko, [[Akemi Homura]], and [[Miki Sayaka]] before the point at which Homura gains the memories of erased timelines.

Before the formation of the MSY, Mami's money was the primary funding that the Four had, and meetings amongst the Four or with other groups were based at her apartment(s), with her serving refreshments.

She nursed an uncharacteristically heavy grudge with [[Mikuni Oriko]], who had gone out of her way to harass her, her territory, and her home. When Oriko died, Mami's only thought was, "I never thought I'd see the day she would go down... I never got to get my revenge."

[[Akiyama Akari]] was a [[Magical Girl]] and girlfriend to Tomoe Mami. She exhausted her soul gem after the plane they were in was struck down by a bomb planted by a stray group of North Korean Magical Girls. The trauma of witnessing the decaying of Akari's soul gem caused Mami to [[reformat]] herself, which would naturally degrade after a few centuries.

Centuries later, the reformat was reversed by Homura, giving evidence that Homura was alive.

==Character==
Mami works hard to project an image of matronly responsibility and has always been the "respectable older sister" figure, as well as the diplomat, of the [[Mitakihara Four]]. During the Cold War with [[SMC]], Mami was the only one of the elder Leadership members to take on a conciliatory stance amongst a sea of poker faces.

Mami is an excellent cook, and still prefers to use fresh produce instead of [[synthesized]] ones.

==[[TacComp]]==
Mami is equipped with a v2 TacComp named Machina, which acts as her close adviser, secretary, and personal processing core. Mami suspects Machina might be fond of Field Marshal Erwynmark, which has "some possibly disturbing implications".

In a vision, Mami learns that Machina is sentient (ref: {{ch|51}}). Machina portrays herself as very young (smaller than Yuma), in contrast to [[Ryouko]]'s TacComp [[Clarisse]] who acts about the same age as Ryouko. It breathed new life into Mami's life. Machine and Clarisse are the two TacComps so far who have witnessed a vision.

==Appearance==
For some reason everyone thinks her hair and eyes are green. I have no objections to that. Her hair is long and wavy (think Hitomi’s hair) but a bit more tentacular (if that makes sense). Remember, the hair is mildly self-mobile (and has a drone hanging off of it).

Her face resembles Hitomi (never said explicitly), but slightly sharper-edged, since instead of wearing that 24/7 ojou-sama look, she has a constant serious look to her. It also appears more childish than Hitomi (think Madoka, for example).

As for her figure, she’s short and flat-chested, but otherwise quite physically fit (with implants, this just sort of automatically happens). Casual clothing wise, she favors the kind of things you saw at the party (white dress, modest shirt top), with maybe pants if she’s not feeling too formal. Costume wise, it’s green, it’s frilly, and it has buttons. It resembles Madoka’s, actually, if you read the description, though it’s not quite as girlish. Dress is a lot less poofy and more practical, among other things. Soul gem is five-pointed star at base of neck. When not transformed, five-pointed star on the appropriate finger (middle finger of left hand, if episode 5 is to be believed). Of course, her weapon is an arbalest mounted on one arm, and she is a teleporter.

(The green of her costume matches the green of the aliens quite well.)

The protagonist Shizuki Ryouko is by all appearances an ordinary girl. Shorter than average, she is constantly worried that her schoolmates don’t take her seriously, and she has consequently learned to conceal whatever girlish tendencies she may have under a cynical outer layer.This is reflective of an overall tendency to worry about her insignificance in the grand scheme of things, and the desire to prove herself. She is frustrated by the seeming banality of life on Earth, and wishes to travel the universe, where she can have meaningful adventures, like her childhood hero Clarisse van Rossum.

More emotional than she admits, she tries to be as rational whenever possible, with mixed success. She is, however, a thoughtful protagonist. When she is engaged, she is unusually focused, to the point of having tunnel vision. When she is unengaged, a part of her is always drifting far away, causing her to pay suboptimal attention to her surroundings. She has little interest in romance, simply because it doesn’t fall into her current set of goals.

In acute crises, she is unlikely to go into hysterics, and indeed may seem level-headed or even cold; this is not indicative of lack of empathy, but simply a core practicality, even in the most extreme cases. In some cases, she can be shockingly blunt-spoken. It is only when her worldview is shaken that she is truly bothered, but she is extremely resilient. These are excellent qualities for a magical girl.

After discovering the existence of her [[Empathy Organ]], she has become wary of even her own intent, beliefs, and of her relationship to [[Asami]], as the latter probably started as a result of rewriting her own pref-spec.

Ryouko's main power is that of teleportation by wormhole. Under normal circumstances, she has a (record-setting) maximum range of 200km - enough to get her into low Earth orbit - but as the limiting factor is her ability to warp space, much larger ranges are theoretically possible depending on the situation. (Indeed, she destroyed this range in the [[Battle of Orpheus]]).

A weakness of her teleportation is that she must teleport herself along with the targets, though with Ceph-communicated information received during [[Project Armstrong]], she gained further knowledge and observational ability and was able to remove this restriction. Additionally, [[Blink Technology|blink interdictors]] disable her ability to create wormholes and teleport (ref: {{ch|62}}).

She also has a climatic attack (ch 2).

After having been brought into the MSY fold, she'd meet a meek magical girl with a great interest in Xenobiology, [[Nakihara Asami]], who had hoped her craft would bring her to the stars. She grows increasingly closer with the girl during the initial training, later assisting during the defence of the HSS Laplace and remaining by Ryouko's side on [[Acheron]]. It is there where she makes her affections towards Ryouko known during a visit to hot springs, kissing Ryouko, and leaving it up to Ryouko as to whether she'd reciprocate. Asked to reckon with what she wants, if she could even want to be with anyone, and after some contact with the Goddess, Ryouko attends Asami's resurrection and comes to reckon her wish, how she wanted to find her place away from earth, how she can no longer even return home after the divorce of her parents. She comes to learn that Asami was possessed by similar thoughts, with her unable to stand her altered family. Her worldview shifts, some part of her mind alters, Clarisse is confounded, as Ryouko decides then and there to become Asami's girlfriend.

There is some natural tension between Ryouko's general want to be in "combat-mode" and Asami's worry about the inherent dangers of such situations, but this is discussed rather maturely and the relationship stays solid and stable throughout the story so far (as of Chapter 70).

===[[Clarisse]]===
As part of her induction into the magical military, Ryouko was implanted with the V1.8 [[TacComp]], though this would be upgraded to a V2 by one [[Joanne Valentin]] at the request of her father. Unlike the initial model, the V2 TacComp would get a name, with Ryouko deciding to name her Clarisse (after one of her childhood heroes) at the TacComp's suggestion. Clarisse stays by Ryouko's side (and on her spine) for the rest of her life, offering plentiful conversation in all things, from battle tactics to relationships, consoling Ryouko in her many times of need.

'''Shizuki Ryouko''' is the protagonist of [[To the Stars]] and a recently-contracted [[magical girl]]. Having spent most of her life in [[Mitakihara City]], she has grown weary of [[Earth|Earth's]] [[monoculture]] and hopes to find her place among the stars, whether it be in the colonies, the ongoing war with the [[Cephalopods]], or perhaps something else entirely. Her opportunity to do so finally arrives when she and her friend [[Simona del Mago]] are saved from a demon attack in the nick of time by [[Tomoe Mami]], famous [[magical girl]] and a leader of the [[Mahou Shoujo Youkai]].

She is notable for her status as the product of both the [[Shizuki Matriarchy|Shizuki]] and [[Kuroi Matriarchy|Kuroi Matriarchies]] (albeit through estranged branches); her tutelage under both [[Tomoe Mami]] and [[Sakura Kyouko]], two of the [[Mitakihara Four]]; and her record-breaking teleportation range of approximately 200 kilometers.

Although she considers herself rational to the point of cynicism, especially with regard to the military and [[Governance]], she is rather less insightful when it comes to her own life and relationships.

==Appearance==
For some reason everyone thinks her hair and eyes are green. I have no objections to that. Her hair is long and wavy (think Hitomi’s hair) but a bit more tentacular (if that makes sense). Remember, the hair is mildly self-mobile (and has a drone hanging off of it).

Her face resembles Hitomi (never said explicitly), but slightly sharper-edged, since instead of wearing that 24/7 ojou-sama look, she has a constant serious look to her. It also appears more childish than Hitomi (think Madoka, for example).

As for her figure, she’s short and flat-chested, but otherwise quite physically fit (with implants, this just sort of automatically happens). Casual clothing wise, she favors the kind of things you saw at the party (white dress, modest shirt top), with maybe pants if she’s not feeling too formal. Costume wise, it’s green, it’s frilly, and it has buttons. It resembles Madoka’s, actually, if you read the description, though it’s not quite as girlish. Dress is a lot less poofy and more practical, among other things. Soul gem is five-pointed star at base of neck. When not transformed, five-pointed star on the appropriate finger (middle finger of left hand, if episode 5 is to be believed). Of course, her weapon is an arbalest mounted on one arm, and she is a teleporter.

(The green of her costume matches the green of the aliens quite well.)

==Personality==
The protagonist Shizuki Ryouko is by all appearances an ordinary girl. Shorter than average, she is constantly worried that her schoolmates don’t take her seriously, and she has consequently learned to conceal whatever girlish tendencies she may have under a cynical outer layer.This is reflective of an overall tendency to worry about her insignificance in the grand scheme of things, and the desire to prove herself. She is frustrated by the seeming banality of life on Earth, and wishes to travel the universe, where she can have meaningful adventures, like her childhood hero Clarisse van Rossum.

More emotional than she admits, she tries to be as rational whenever possible, with mixed success. She is, however, a thoughtful protagonist. When she is engaged, she is unusually focused, to the point of having tunnel vision. When she is unengaged, a part of her is always drifting far away, causing her to pay suboptimal attention to her surroundings. She has little interest in romance, simply because it doesn’t fall into her current set of goals.

In acute crises, she is unlikely to go into hysterics, and indeed may seem level-headed or even cold; this is not indicative of lack of empathy, but simply a core practicality, even in the most extreme cases. In some cases, she can be shockingly blunt-spoken. It is only when her worldview is shaken that she is truly bothered, but she is extremely resilient. These are excellent qualities for a magical girl.

After discovering the existence of her [[Empathy Organ]], she has become wary of even her own intent, beliefs, and of her relationship to [[Asami]], as the latter probably started as a result of rewriting her own pref-spec.

Ryouko's main power is that of teleportation by wormhole. Under normal circumstances, she has a (record-setting) maximum range of 200km - enough to get her into low Earth orbit - but as the limiting factor is her ability to warp space, much larger ranges are theoretically possible depending on the situation. (Indeed, she destroyed this range in the [[Battle of Orpheus]]).

A weakness of her teleportation is that she must teleport herself along with the targets, though with Ceph-communicated information received during [[Project Armstrong]], she gained further knowledge and observational ability and was able to remove this restriction. Additionally, [[Blink Technology|blink interdictors]] disable her ability to create wormholes and teleport (ref: {{ch|62}}).

She also has a climatic attack (ch 2).

==Relationships==
===[[Asami]]===
After having been brought into the MSY fold, she'd meet a meek magical girl with a great interest in Xenobiology, [[Nakihara Asami]], who had hoped her craft would bring her to the stars. She grows increasingly closer with the girl during the initial training, later assisting during the defence of the HSS Laplace and remaining by Ryouko's side on [[Acheron]]. It is there where she makes her affections towards Ryouko known during a visit to hot springs, kissing Ryouko, and leaving it up to Ryouko as to whether she'd reciprocate. Asked to reckon with what she wants, if she could even want to be with anyone, and after some contact with the Goddess, Ryouko attends Asami's resurrection and comes to reckon her wish, how she wanted to find her place away from earth, how she can no longer even return home after the divorce of her parents. She comes to learn that Asami was possessed by similar thoughts, with her unable to stand her altered family. Her worldview shifts, some part of her mind alters, Clarisse is confounded, as Ryouko decides then and there to become Asami's girlfriend.

There is some natural tension between Ryouko's general want to be in "combat-mode" and Asami's worry about the inherent dangers of such situations, but this is discussed rather maturely and the relationship stays solid and stable throughout the story so far (as of Chapter 70).

===[[Clarisse]]===
As part of her induction into the magical military, Ryouko was implanted with the V1.8 [[TacComp]], though this would be upgraded to a V2 by one [[Joanne Valentin]] at the request of her father. Unlike the initial model, the V2 TacComp would get a name, with Ryouko deciding to name her Clarisse (after one of her childhood heroes) at the TacComp's suggestion. Clarisse stays by Ryouko's side (and on her spine) for the rest of her life, offering plentiful conversation in all things, from battle tactics to relationships, consoling Ryouko in her many times of need.
